We went to Louisiana yesterday to visit Melanie's grandmother. On the way back we passed a punkin patch when we stopped in Iowa, LA for dinner. David had fun if no-one else did \:\)

It is a great pic \:\)

Weird thing in UK though - we only ever see pumpkins at Halloween (at least down south).

Also - I've heard repeated reports that the Halloween pumpkin harvest was well behind target and the supermarkets were expecting a shortage.

Yet today, my wife picked up a monster pumpkin for 99p (50c) instead of the usual £3.99 ($8.00)

I've heard that pumpkin pie is popular in the 'states.
Is that all year around or seasonal?

No offence but unless your pumpkins taste different to ours - it sounds disgusting!

My wife says pumpkins in Asia taste way different to those in Europe. I've never tasted it - the smell (scooping out a Halloween mask) puts me right off \:\(

Maybe the wife isn't putting in the spices and sugar ;\)

With the right combination pumpkin pie is excellent and yes it is a defacto standard at Thanksgiving in the US along with MinceMeat and Pecan pie

Pumpkin pies can be year round, but I only eat them during the holidays.

Around this part, we don't really get to visit pumpkin patches, they don't like people in their fields anymore; which is a shame as that was one of my favorite things to do as a kid, go out and pick me a punkin!

But now, they just bring their crop up to the farmhouse and you get to point which you want out of big boxes... one even has a train to access their farmhouse from the road, it costs $5 a person to ride it, then you spend like $1/lb to get a pumpkin (some are way cheaper though)

Funny, in the UK it's about the only thing that's bought for the seeds and not the fruit.

 Quote:
Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of minerals, with just a quarter of a cup containing nearly 20% of the recommended daily intake of zinc and 50% of the daily recommended intake for magnesium and manganese.

As well as containing some B vitamins they also contain good amounts of vitamin K, needed for bone health and blood clotting.

In terms of their fat content, pumpkin seeds are a good way to get both the omega 3 and 6 essential fats needed for hormone balance, brain function and skin health.

You can buy them on their own, baked in bread, mixed with cereals, just about anything. Can't get hold of a pumpkin though!

( PS: Just had a scoot round the Interweb and someone thinks it's a pumking! :rotflmao: )

Thank you, I added a couple more \:\)

I agree with SK, pumpkins can be used in a lot of recipes - we cooked pumpkin pancakes with praline sauce for Thanksgiving morning breakfast a couple years ago that were AWESOME. Breads and especially pie are great most anytime, tho we usually eat them seasonally in the fall.

Well he asked about PIE, but if we want to go into just Pumpkin well here in California it is in the store in all types of products every day year round. We even have a pumpkin creamer for coffee if you want. Cookies, Pies, Cakes, Drinks, Bread - you name it and there is probably a pumpkin version of it somewhere here.
