With the volume of posts you have it is not at all unnusual for the browser to time out before the altertables are done. log into mysql either via command line or phpmyadmin and issue a show processlist to see if the alter is still running or not. in phpmyadmin there is a link for that command on the main page, left side panel as I recall.
