Hi...

I stopped using my board for a long time and have just recently gotten an idea to start using it again. I decided to start from scratch and take off all my old files and remove the board completely. I then unzipped the copy of the board that I had downloaded and proceeded to follow the instructions to install it again. However, now anytime I try to execute a script in the cgi directory, I receive an error stating: "HTTP 401.3 - Access denied by ACL on resource."

I've checked my permissions on the cgi directory (a dozen or more times) and checked that I can run scripts & executables from the IIS MMC, but still nothing. I can copy html pages in my cgi directory and view them without a problem. I've also uninstalled & reinstalled perl.

I'm running IIS 5, Active Perl 5.8.0 and UBB 5.45.

Anyone have any suggestions?

5.45? Yikes. I suggest upgrading once you get things working again. 5.45 is nearly four years old.

Do other Perl scripts on the machine work? Check to ensure that the IUSR_ account has read and execute access to the Perl installation directory.

Actually, I've talked with our manager about upgrading...they're always reluctant to spend money!

I found out what the problem was. Somehow the permissions on the ACL for my perlbin directory became reset so that the IUSR_machinename account access was removed. But now I'm having a different problem. Here is the error message I'm recieving when I try to update my general settings via the control panel:

Unable to open thread summary file at D:Inetpubcgi-binubb/ubb_library.pl line 1406.

I've checked my mappings for .cgi & .pl files to make sure IIS knows how to handle them, and I've re-checked permissions for all concerned directories. Any other suggestions?

That sounds like yet another permissions error. Ensure that the IUSR_ account also has everything but Full Access to the entire NonCGI directory, and all subdirectories within it.

Awesome! That was it. Seems to be working fine now.

If I were to get a new version, could this board be upgraded or would I have to start from scratch?

You can easily upgrade the board. All of your settings, styles, members, forums, posts, etc, would be migrated over to the 6-series.

You might want to grab the Trial Version (link on the left menu) and make a new install of it on your server so you can get the hang of the 6-series. It's quite a change from 5.x
