Dear Charles Capps, UBB Development team, and readers:

I initially installed UBB.classic in 1999 (Version 5.38B) and have been using it since for the DeafNotes.com Website. I've seen posts on the UBB Development page urging me to update...to move up to the latest version. What I've been using has worked well, so far, for my company and our UBB posters.

Now that WebTen has made iTools 7.3 available, that enabled to move up to the G3. I purchased a UBB.classic Gold License two years ago. I want to use Macintosh OSX 10.3.5 with iTools 7.3. That's an upgrade from the previous Macintosh OS 9.2.2 with WebTen. Time for a clean sweep here. I want to "bury" OS9 with WebTen and move to a completely new server. At the same time, it will free up one server for me to install brand-new software and get ready for the new UBB product, to be available in Spring 2005, as I've been informed.

According to the "newsbrief" I read, when the new UBB setup is installed, I will lose some features from 6.7.2, so I don't want to bother installing that version. I think I will skip that upgrade in favor of the brand-new UBB setup (name still to be released). When the new UBB software debuts, I will purchase a new license for that, so that my current setup will be "archived" with functionable retrieval capabilities.

In this message, I want to focus on one immediate problem that needs fixing.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I checked the path and examined the setup carefully. I've been using the "old" WebTen. I haven't worried about chmod 755, but iTools requires chmod 755. I fixed all paths properly with chmod 755 and 777. All folders have been cleaned up and fixed, as you can see on DeafNotes.com.

One old path looks like active.cgi from WebTen--
$varpath = "/usr/local/etc/httpd/cgi-bin";
One new path looks like active.cgi to iTool 7.3 (the company's name is Tenon)
$varpath = "/Library/Tenon/WebServer/CGI-Executables";
To check my work--if it's successfully displayed--

http://www.deafnotes.com/cgi-bin/active.cgi

FYI, you see the DeafNotes' home page with the "20 most recent active topics/click here" graphic (click-box with pencils)--here's the URL:

http://www.deafnotes.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi

When this box is clicked, a numbered menu with post titles, dates, and links is supposed to pop out, with the header: "20 Most Recent Posts." The problem is that there is just a BLANK SPACE where the menu should be displayed. Can you tell me what's wrong, why this is happening, and how we can fix it?

http://www.deafnotes.com/bb/ubb/recent2.html

Can you look into the View Source and tell me what's wrong?

This is the script from inside recent2.html--
< !--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/active.cgi"-->
I am utterly baffled by this, because I have never changed the settings. So why isn't it working?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've rechecked the UBB Website and the UBB Central message-board posts. In particular, I've studied the posts to and from Mr. Capps, J.C., Hal, and Graeme, representing other UBB users who were having problems similar to mine. I followed up on each suggestion and recommendation I saw posted. I also followed up on recommendations posted outside of the UBB Classic board.

What I'm posting below is a series of suggestions I've followed up on--but I STILL can't fix the problem. The menu-display still won't work properly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

One Website suggested I add "executer.cgi"...I did, to no effect, so I removed the script.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried again, but it didn't work, so I removed it.
< !--#exec cgi="../../cgi-bin/active.cgi"-->
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought I might be having a problem with ../../ so I tried to remove ../../ and moved recent2.html without /bb/ubb/
http://www.deafnotes.com/recent2.html with
< !--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/active.cgi"-->
But this doesn't work either.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried this one too... but it didn't work either, so I removed it. I am not sure about the SSI stuff. Is the SSI connected with "include virtual" and not "exec cgi"?
< !--#include virtual="/cgi-bin/active.cgi"-->
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

One Website suggestion was that I add .htaccess in our server, but I understand nothing about .htaccess. Can you explain this?
If iTools 7.3 doesn't require this, should I add it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In closing...
I still don't understand why the URL itself works splendidly--

http://www.deafnotes.com/cgi-bin/active.cgi

but not with
< !--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/active.cgi"-->
WHY?

I am eager to see your response, and hope you can give me an explanation, and please include the EXACT script command for me to copy and paste into our server.

In advance, I thank you for reading this, and for your assistance.

I would recommend asking the Tenon people how to enable ssi under iTools. I'm the only one here using a Mac and I use the default Apache installation included with OSX. I've never seen iTools and really have no ideas to offer other than to ask them how to configure their product. They would know best.
