It would be actually good to have features for admins to be able to set the length of time on different boards to allow posts to be kept. so this way it will reduce the chances of database size increase etc.

This is in 3.0. For each individual board you can set an expire date. So if you have an expire date of '5' then posts older than 5 days old will be purged.
