Hi all,
I'm having a slightly different problem compared to Mark. When I click on General Settings, I get the error "The page cannot be displayed". The bottom of the screen says:

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer

Any idea what I am doing wrong? I have the stock directory setup (cgi-bin, Members, ubb) according to the install directions, and have referenced the URL to the cgi-bin directory correctly in the cplinks.html file. Does the above error mean anything to anyone? Thanks for any help If I can get the demo working, we're more than willing to buy the product...

This is what I get on your site:

%1 is not a valid Windows NT application.

That means .cgi and .pl have not been properly mapped to perl. See this page.

Different than what I get, but I'll take your word that .cgi and .pl are not mapped correctly. If my tech guy would have contacted me today, we might have attempted to resolve this, but didn't hear from them. Thanks for the advice Hal, and once they've checked out their end, I'll let you know if that fixes things

Just wanted to bump this topic, as no one from the UBB staff has responded yet... (thanks for your tip Hal!)... the ISP where I'm hosted is looking into the problem of .cgi and .pl not being mapped correctly. His initial response from the URL referenced in Hals reply was that it looked to cause an NT security problem and was not something he could do in a few minutes as suggested on that page...

So he was going to check with an NT admin newsgroup or something... is UBB that hard to install, or can it cause NT security holes or issues??

I do not really use NT so I cannot give an authoritative answer. My impression is that many hosts have very inexperienced tech support and customer service people at the first level. The folks here who use NT regularly do not think it is a big deal to set permissions and map extensions.

Mapping .cgi to perl is a 10 second admin job.

Just a thought

Hi,

I'm currently hosting my forums at Interland and in playing around with some directory settings I had the same problem you had. Interland offers three settings for directories on their NT servers:
1. No scripts, no execute
2. Scripts, no execute
3. Scripts and execute

When the directory was set to number 3 I got the internal server error 500. When set to number 2, scripts only, the scripts executed without a problem.

I believe the execute option is intended for downloading purposes to have a browser trigger the download dialog when a hyperlink references an .exe or .zip in that directory. For the cgi-bin directory this is not necessery.

Hope this helps.

Joe,

You should start a new topic with your problem rather than piggy-backing. That is the custom on this board.

You need to test also with hello.cgi to be sure that .cgi is mapped to perl. See this page.

Ok, my ISP Admin says he fixed the permission per the URL in the dox, but I still get the same error:

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer

Could someone once again take a look at this: http://www.backflow.org/ubb/cp.html I'm going on two weeks trying to install this product, with zero luck. As I mentioned, if I could get this running successfully, my non-profit org financing the site would be more than willing to buy the product... I only need to demo a working version. Thanks for any assistance.
