#149528 - 05/01/02 10:27 AM SMTP on Win2k Server

I'm running UBB 6.2.1.3 on my own Win2K server. Everything works fine but I cannot SMTP. Both the IIS and UBB are on the same machine which is 10.0.0.2. The error message is "I could not connect to the SMTP server."

The strange thing about this is that other "internal" SMTP e-mail is generated with no problem; I get nightly server status reports, FP2002 can send mail out, Exchange is properly set up and running fine, even Backup Exec sends me reports via SMTP from the server. Any ideas?

Welcome James

Do you have smtp settings to share?

I'm not sure what you mean by settings. The SMTP server is part of IIS 5.0 and is located on the same server which is hosting the site - 10.0.0.2.

Stuff like:

Is relay turned on?

If so (it needs to be for ubb's email to work), is your domain/ip address listed in the "allow from" box?

What do you have listed as the smtp server?

Yes, relay is turned on and other services running on the site can send via SMTP. Everything is on 10.0.0.2 and this is reflected in the SMTP relay dialog.

My question: is there something "different" in the way UBB accesses SMTP? Services as diverse as Backup Exec to FrontPage have no problems sending SMTP on this same server - everything is set to access SMTP using 10.0.0.2 and Port 25. I've turned "relay everything" on and still get the same message from UBB.

I've also tried a variety of settings in the UBB control panel from 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.2:25 to server.e-lawpublishing.local to server.e-lawpublishing.com to server.e-lawpublishing.local:25. You get the picture.

Try the domain's ip address if it's the default web site on the server, as the 10.0.0.2 is a local network setting

That may fix the problem, since relay is the the usual other culprit

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried my external site IP 64.90.180.114 and my gateway IP 64.90.180.113 but still the same error. The strange thing is that I've got full reporting on and am getting nothing on the Event Viewer or the SMTP log.

Does the script use a standard "path" to SMTP or am I missing something in permissions or the firewall or what. Let me try opening all my firewall ports and see if that helps. 25 is open and, like I said, SMTP otherwise works fine in the variety of environments I have going on this server.

Is there any log or any way to "see" what's going on? Any debug script?

You may consider opening a support ticket with Infopop then and have them look at it. It sounds like your settings are correct.

I am having a similar problem with Ver 6.3 on a windows 2000 server. But this is a post install problem. My host provider says everything looks okay on his end.
Could someone provide what the problem was? And the correction.

I was having a smtp connection errors on all email functions. No email from UBB.Message"I can't connect to the smtp server".
My host provider said all was well.
I was able to relay mail via telnet.
My host checked all UBB documentaion and said the settings were correct.
They then setup a new smtp server. Still without success. I then opened a support ticket with Infopop. Sunday my host called and said lets try a new server. They meoved me to a new server with the same version of perl and Windows 2000.
So far everything is working fine now. So I closed the support ticket with Infopop.
I would just like to have some idea of what the problem was for future reference.

It really sounds like they didn't have the original smtp server setup correctly if all they said that changed was the hardware. You gotta have relay turned on for email to work, most server admins turn it off to fight spam. You can allow relay from just the ip of your forum tho to keep spam down and allow your forum to work.

Glad you got it working

Well my delimma was that I have had UBB installed since ver5.47 on this same identical site and then all of a sudden smtp connections fail.
I just think that this is odd. Something must have changed on the host's server to start the problem.

I have UBB.classic 6.3.0.1 installed on Windows 2000 and am trying to get it to access the SMTP server, but the web server I am running it on is behind a firewall and they Admin doesn't want to enable Relaying from all addresses.

I found the IP that it is using to access the SMTP server in IIS5, but it comes up with the following message when it tries to access the server:

550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for <email address deleted>

The SMTP server has rejected the email address the UBB tried to send mail to.

Please ensure that the UBB is allowed to relay mail through the SMTP server, and that that the From: email address (email address deleted) is a valid email address from this domain.

Thanks.

The error is pretty self-explanitory. The server has not been properly configured to allow proper relaying. Unfortunately, this is not something we can help you with here - we're UBB experts, not MS SMTP server specialists.

Some of us are better with SMTP setup than ubb CC

To allow relay from your site through the smtp server, right click on the Default SMTP Virtual Server and go to :

Properties >> Access >> Relay

Fill out the box like this:

Click OK twice. That should fix the relay problem.

I'll do a tutorial soon to include the whole smtp setup routine.

Yes.

I think it is a problem with the Firewall for the website.

We've been running our Forum for almost 3 years, and have never had any email problems. Now, out of the blue, we're getting the "I could not connect to the SMTP Server" error message. No UBB settings have been changed. We recently applied the most recent Microsoft SP. However, all other software that sends email works fine. Relay is set correctly.

I see that this problem has cropped up for a number of other people (about a dozen forum submissions refer to it) - yet I don't see any acknowledgement that there is a problem, and a fix.

Can someone who has fixed this provide an answer?

I haven't had the problem or I'd post the answer I have recently applied SP3 as well without problems.

Check the answer given in the bottom of here:
http://community.infopop.net/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=729094322&f=7973010413&m=6623019975

and see if that does it for you.

Nope, no change. (Do I need to restart/reload for this to take effect?).

Also: Upgraded from 6.3 to 6.3.1.1, to the latest build of Activeperl as well. I've turned relaying off, stood on one foot, and pulled most of my hair out.

Is relaying still off? It has to be on for mail to work with ubb.

Set it to relay only through the IP of your forum/site so you don't get slammed by spam police. You might need to re-start IIS for it to take effect after setting this.

My type before - Relay has always been on, and allowed for all local machines. Again, this has worked for over 2 years until now. I've tried changing 10 parameters and back, with no luck.

Since the email log has NO indication that it's even getting a network connection from UBB, I tried changing the UBB setting for the mail server to the IP address - and things work. So, it looks like the DNS lookup that UBB is doing fails - since the mail software never gets a connection. I tried DNS lookups on that machine, and they work fine.

ahhh, ok. I have always used the ip address for my smtp server, I guess that's why I didn't think to ask that.

I'll point the crew to this one just as a heads-up in case things have changed.

Thanks for sticking with it until a fix was found.
