#152282 - 04/25/03 01:17 AM e-mail problems

Two upgrades ago, I started getting a copy of EVERY e-mail that was sent by the board. Personal messages, etc. Then after the last upgrade, I now get NO e-mails. From what I can tell, other people are getting notices, etc., so it just seems to be me.

I've tried re-uploading the code to no avail. At the latest level. URL=http://levitt.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi
Running Unix on a shared server (soon to get a dedicated server).

I've been working around the problem, but I'm not getting bad post alerts. I guess I'll turn those off until I figure this thing out. I tried reporting a post myself and got no errors, but also no e-mail. I'm the admin as well as the moderator for the entire board.

Any ideas? I know this sounds weird.

Are you using sendmail or SMTP?

Using sendmail. I just checked the path using the "where" command it it's correct. Apparently other people are getting mail (though maybe not always--I get occasional "I didn't get my password" notes). I get mail when I send directly to my email account. If I hadn't had that strange experience where I was getting a copy of ALL the mail, I'd say there was just some problem with my mail account or something.

I've exhausted all my theories now so I thought I'd check with you guys.

Getting a dedicated server in a few weeks. Maybe that will solve all my problems.

The only thing we've done with the mail routines lately is altering the way we call sendmail - we now force the from address using the -f switch. I don't see how that could cause any problems, however...

If I feel particularly motivated sometime, I may try playing with the -f flag and see if that makes any difference on our system. Unfortunatly my web host was bought out recently and this happened somewhere around the time they moved the serves also. So, there are many variables.

In the meantime, I switched to using SMTP and it all seems to work fine now! I even got errors when I was using a server that didn't allow forwarding at first. Would have been nice if I got errors from sendmail when it failed. I now suspect that NO mail has gone out in about 3 weeks (sigh).

Anyway, I got the problem worked-around for now. Hope no one else is having this happen. Thanks.

If SMTP is working for you, do stay with it... SMTP to a local server is often faster than sendmail.
