As posted in the shoutbox... If your sig is EXACTLY at the limit (250 here) its "too long". As I later found out it's also saying I'm at my limit with as little as 249; yet trimming myself to 248 I get it to accept it...

The problem here is that 248 is not 250, where the limit IS 250 I should be able to enter in 250 characters...

Oh, and this was found HERE at UBBCentral...

Ok, it's counting the linebreaks as characters. So If your signature spans a couple lines that would be why. Line 335 of scripts/changebasic.inc.php looks like this:

if ( strlen($Signature) > $config['SIGNATURE_LENGTH'] ) {

Change that, to this:

$lengthcheck = preg_replace("#(\n|\r|<br />)#","",$Signature);
if ( strlen($lengthcheck) > $config['SIGNATURE_LENGTH'] ) {

Not for nothing, but I definitely see breaks as counting as characters!

Nothing worse than saying "your sig is only allowed to have so-many characters", and then some smart aleck makes it really TALL with a bunch of breaks. lol

Actually - what'd be great is if we could distinguish characters displayed: that is, HTML code and URLs don't count toward the limit - only displayed characters. I'd vote for that (if we could vote ;))

It makes sense to me that linebreaks should count towards the limit, but what also makes sense is to limit the number of lines a signature can be.

Where can I find the setting to alter the sig length? Or is this a code-hack?

Found it, nog on the most logical place imho \:\)

control panel > Display options > general > Topic display options > Maximum Signature Length (Characters):

I also vote for a max. line control. Heck, I even posted a hack for that on UBBDev \:D

Edit: Where gizmo says it is \:\)

Gentlemen! Both of you!

Thank you very much for that - I had been going around and around, looking for the solution.

I'm not sure why I couldn't find it?
I have a theory that if you are looking too hard, you get 'snow blind' or solution blind (in this case).

Kind of like.... "You can't see the wood for the trees" if you are familiar with the expression.

That's always going to be a problem with something as feature-rich as this baby! \:\) \:D

Thanks again \:\)

My only string of hope is that Gizomo also had to wade through the entire control panel to find it \:D
