Am new to UBB Threads, but old to the topic of web systems. We have setup a dev system with MySQL local to that same host. In a few weeks or a couple months at most, we will have developed everything to the point where I want to take it live. At that time, I will want to migrate from this dev server, to a two-tier production level App server (already out there doing our production web services!).

So the question is: How do I copy/migrate UBBThreads 7.x from one system to another. Different hostnames, different DB names, but I want to carry ALL forums, topics, config, users, etc.

I should have noted, that I have two assumptions already...
1) Use mysqldump to export and import the DB, edit the UBBThreads db config file (for new db server name and db name if I change it...)

- OR -

2) Use the Database tools "backup" UBBThreads dbs (all) but I don't see the instructions for "restoring". Unless again - that's a mysqldump command...

#1 would be the best route.

If you have a big board then doing a mysql dump is WAY quicker than backing up via the control panel. In my case the first way took about 30 seconds while the second way took close to 12 hrs.

Does anyone know how quickly a database can be rebuilt from a mysql dump? If it took me around 30 secs to make a 500meg dump, what kind of time-frame am I looking at to rebuild a db from that dump if I move servers? Couple of minutes?

inserting an sql dump from command line is quite fast as well, a couple minutes max.

MySQL Import: mysql -h localhost -uusername -ppassword database_name < dump_name.sql

Excellent! Thanks folks! The only other concern I have (but it won't affect us THIS time) is if we do change hostnames/server name. But again my gut says - start it up, login, and doublecheck all settings... If I run into any problems - start it up faking the old hostname, edit config (putting in the new hostname entries) and then restart using the new hostname. Again - seems pretty straightforward even in the worst case. So far I'm quite please with both the flexibility, simplicity, and maximum functionality. These are key values we build into our solution as well (I work for a small startup creating a web based Work Activity Management solution)...

Thanks again!

a migration is easy, turn off forum, back up db, install new at the new location, restore your sql dump, then you're moved (for the most part)
