is there a way to put a google adspace in the right side column?

Create a custom portal box, drop your adsense code in, then set it to where you want it displayed.

There is a "modification" at UBBDev which shows how a custom adsense island looks.

is that 'custom Portal Island"?

Thanks Gizmo I'll have to check back on this as there are Google Ads on the site I admin. I'm trying to get the owner to do away with them but so far I still have to use them

Maybe placing them in the islands is cleaner though.
