Apparently our members got too excited, over-used and crashed the Shout Box. The shout box is now blank.

I have the following error in IE 6.0:

Line: 53
Char: 2
Error: Object required
Code: 0
URL: http://xxxxxxxx/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/cfrm

Any Ideas?

make sure another Mod or Admin didn't delete them.

I had this issue and after a couple days a Mod admitted he had removed them. He thought he was only removing them for himself.

Though it still should not give an error to you by being blank.
Maybe try another browser for testing

You lost me.. Removed what?

With the Shout Box enabled, an error in IE6 shows in the bottom left corner of the window. If I remove the Shout Box from the forum, no error is present.

It's not just my browser because no members can use the Shout Box any longer.

That's an odd line for an error. Might need you to open up a trouble ticket with admin info to your board so I can take a look at a few things.

FYI...

I did a SELECT * FROM ubbt_SHOUT_BOX

and it returned the last 30 entries...

Then I did TRUNCATE TABLE ubbt_SHOUT_BOX

then I reenabled the Shout Box in teh portal and it now works....

FYI

Blanked out again tonight.. Had to TRUNCATE again.

Apparently if there is too much activity, it blanks out.

I'm curious if maybe there are some certain characters maybe being put in. For example, in it's current state, chinese characters would do that. Next time it blanks out, take a look at the contents of each shout and see if you can find any shouts that contain special characters.

I'll take a look next time it blanks out.

It seems that you can still enter comments but the display is greyed out based on teh SELECT * FROM ubbt_SHOUT_BOX return. It returns 30 entries. Perhaps the early entries are not getting deleted and are overflowing the stack?

The Shout Box is blank and here is the latest cache from teh shout box. I made one entry while it was blank and it is at the bottom. Is it popssible that the "tilde" from the user ~Angelwitch~ is causing the problem?

If you haven't cleared it out yet, then we can maybe try and track down which line is actually causing it to go blank. One by one you can delete the shout entries and then test if it comes back

delete from ubbt_SHOUT_BOX where SHOUT_ID='18'

That will delete the last one. Then try:

delete from ubbt_SHOUT_BOX where SHOUT_ID='17'

Keep working your way backwards and checking to see when it comes back and then that would tell us what line actually caused it to blank out. I can't imagine it would be the ~ but not sure.

Cool.. I wanted to do that last night but I got tired of searching the MySQL online manual trying to find the syntax to delete one line.

OK, the Shout Box crashed again.

I don't have time to start deleteing rows one by one right now. I'll have to do it later on, but let me ask you this...

When I cleared the table and the entries started comming in as shown above, each row was sequential starting from 2 (I deleted #1) through 18...

This time I looked at the cache and the SHOUT_ID in the table was completely out of order. The last entry I put in while it was blank was entered 4th from the bottom. Why would the order of the rows get scrambled? I don't know if this is just a symptom or not. The table I posted above was in order but blanked.

Here is the Table: (please excuse the wacky members)

SHOUT_ID USER_ID SHOUT_DISPLAY_NAME SHOUT_TEXT SHOUT_TIME USER_IP

This is just the order that mysql returns them with a default query. To return them in their actual order you'd run this SQL command:

select * from ubbt_SHOUT_BOX order by SHOUT_ID

I'd immagine it was one of the last ones, since it seems that they see the posts before to be ale to comment... I'd immagine its between 9 and 17... IMO try deleting entry 16 since it looks like thats where things die.

On my forums I can't type the word lynx (with a space after it) without the server denying it (Forbidden)... wonder if it could be something as dumb as that, as it's some sort of hacker filter or something on the server itself...

PS - Okay, never mind - just saw you mention it's the ampersand.

Way back in the early betas this was a problem, which is why I'm curious on your version. I know your initial subject labeled it as 7.1.b3 but I know that can't be the case because that hasn't been released to the public yet ;\)

This is due to your host using mod_security; lynx is on their fail list (i've used it before lol).

I'm wondering if & is being escaped properly...

Rick, by viewing his sql info that he dropped earlier, & is shown as & and isnt escaped as:
Code:
&

Could it be breaking the shoutbox by not being ran through htmlentities?

Aha, I guess I better clarify on the subject lines for the News posts ;\)

I know we fixed a few issues with the shoutbox in 7.0.2, so I'm wondering if maybe all of the files didn't get updated, if you upgraded from a previous version. At this point I'd recommend opening a support ticket with FTP and admin info so I can take a looksee.

Gizmo, the & to & translation actually gets done when it's pulled from the database and sent to the browser. It stores it in it's original format.

Yeah, the reason I was fooled is becasue that was the approximate date our forum was updated from 6.1.1 to 7.0.2

Anyways, I sent the info to the site owner.. we'll see if he reponds to the request.
