Is there any way I can limit the custom avatars (remote, or uploaded avatars) to a specific group (such as moderators)?

Not that I'm aware of at this time. The idea and methods of more control for this and other items has been brought up though so stay tuned...

I never got my head around the group thing in classic,
but agree groups for control has to be the way forward
with all permissions and privilages.

indeed - the biggest use of groups is the ability to restrict certain activities to a paid or premium group. Maybe through post count or payment.

Am thinking of things link custom title, number of people allowed in a PM, chatroom etc....

Also maybe forums that only a certain group of people can use etc...
