I had two columns (with the ability to turn off the right one)

My members said they wanted more space - especially when using PDA's etc....

They enjoyed the shoutbox - so did not turn off the right menu

I then move all boxes to the left - they say they are right handed and like the shoutbox on the right.

So I move them all to the right....

Still they are not happy....

Oh well....

Like you said, you cant please them all. Answer from the postcard with you on the beach sipping ritas, lol

of course it would be nice for people to be able to move the items where they like (but making some compulsory)

'eh i'm not really interested in this for my wishlist ian hehe... I spent hours working on placement, and if users don't like it, they can leave just as easily as they joined lol...

that is not really the answer - choice is what people like - if they dislike the shoutbox they should have the option for it not to be displayed for example. Some people are left handed and like their screen different to others.

Tell me about it. We've had more than a few discussions over the desired layout of the board on our site between Mods and Admins.

Unless ultimately the end user has control of the layout then you're just not going to please everyone. Not that you should give that control to the user though as some Web Masters want their site to look a specific way whether or not a few people like or not.

If this come about then compulsory islands should be listed
as i may have a sponsor list or google adds?

you'd have to allow islands to be put on both sidebars, then you could make a genaric layout with the things the same on both, then disable one by default and allow users to deselect one of them...
