Well most of the reviews I've read of RTM Vista code show that many applications are slower on Vista. There are some that are faster though. Most games are slower and those that use OpenGL are up to 1/4 the speed on Vista that they run on XP.

My friend has a vista look theme its pretty good.
But just from the mentions above, i can see my current PC
ending its life on XP when ever that may be.

All ready sounds like a Service Pack is needed.

Actually interested in your feedback on Office 2007 - in the beta I found issues with it not wanting to run my older plugins and DDE for some things didn't work well. But it was beta and may work now in RTM.

Well since I make a living supporting Windows here is a little more information to ponder.

From here: http://www.openal.org/openal_vista.html
 Quote:
EAX has become the de facto standard for real-time effects processing. It has been incorporated in hundreds of games and has become the method of choice for game developers wanting to add interactive environment effects to their titles. Some of the best selling games of all time use the EAX extensions to DirectSound 5.0 and beyond, including Warcraft3, Diablo2, World of Warcraft, Half Life, Ghost Recon, F.E.A.R. and many others. Under Windows Vista, these games will be losing the hardware support that came as standard under the previous Windows Operating Systems, and will no longer provide real-time interactive effects, making them sound empty and lifeless by comparison to the way they sound on Windows XP.

Something I have read is that even if you have a 64bit processor you are better running the 32bit version.

The other problem for us Brits is that M$ are ripping us off again...

We pay twice as much as you do in the USA - if it is $199 over there, it is £199 over here \:\(

Yes for now typically true as there are not sufficient optimized 64Bit drivers yet. Though hopefully as with each version of Windows since NT 3.1 it doesn't take too long before those drivers become available. Though Vista 32Bit drivers will still be available sooner than 64Bit \:\(

You can buy Vista OEM from £55 Sterling.
Ive seen them on ebuyer.

Only thing is people have said that if that motherboard
fails then you need a new copy with the OEM stuff.
There are so many roumours.

Yes, legally you would need a new copy. The OEM can only be installed on the same system it was originally installed.
Though if you replaced the motherboard and the rest of the computer remains the same .... gets a bit gray in that area but to me it's still the same case and other hardware so it's the same computer.

Are we talking legal ethics here, or, are you saying Vista won't (literally) run on another system?

I have two computers: My new one comes with a free upgrade to Vista. Can I install it on my old system (ethics aside ;\) ) even thought I've authenticated XP on the new one? (I want to keep XP on my new system, but wanna "try out" Vista on my old one)

So legal issues aside - would that work? (My old system doesn't have a legit copy of XP on it, tho. That could stop be right there, right? :/ But I'd do a clean install, so.....?)

This is only with OEM Software.

If you check the Retail prices of none OEM you can see that its alot more as in £69 to £250 ish

As ntdoc mentions with OEM there only vaild for that mother board.

I guess on the install you have to Authenticate it,
and that's where it all changes.

The first one to talk to microsoft will be valid i guess.
And the other will fail.

As the results show, XP is actually faster lol

I haven't made EAX work on my WinXP machine ever. \:\( I'm going to read those links you posted. Thank you. \:\)

On another note, I think I noticed somewhere here that it's possible that upgrading a machine will cause Vista problems? I'm using the same machine I cobbled together back in 95. Of course every few months or so something breaks or wears out and gets replaced. The last original piece, the floppy drive, was replaced last winter. It's Win2k because my WinXP software made me call Microsoft every time I reinstalled. I'm not even sure Vista will run on this slap dash piece of equipment and I surely don't want to have to be hassled by a legally purchased and registered piece of software over hardware upgrades. I've already got 2 XP licenses I don't and wont use because the machines they were to be installed on received cpu or MB replacements. Still on 2k, don't think they will get upgraded.

Why would I buy Vista? Seems to me that it is made for pre-assembled computers purchased new from dell, not for me. I'd love to be wrong, I'd love to move to something newer than Win2k, but what I'm reading is not filling me with good feelings.

Am I wrong?

Nope I'm with you on this upgrade David, meaning that I'm not going to upgrade to it on any of my personal computers.

Also if your hardware is older then Windows 2000 is going to operate faster and with less in your face annoyances (IMHO)

Work ones I have no choice as it is now coming with Vista.

So I wasn't wrong?

I'm not sure I've been this disappointed.

Why would they do this? Are they only looking to have the share of the market that comes from people buying new computers with pre-installed software?

There is actually a lot of changes at the kernel and driver level that are good for overall security but a lot was also left out because it still has to basically be semi-backwards compatible with all the hardware and software that is already out there on an estimated 300+ million systems.

MS could actually do some really secure and good things but they would have to drop all support for previous versions and much of the software. A boring subject probably for most but if you watch or read some of the in-depth technical articles and not just the media reporter guys that are weak at best you could see some pretty amazing stuff. However since no business is going to drop support and customers for a multi-billion dollar hardware/software industry then a lot of those changes can't happen right away. They really wanted to drop the Registry as it got out of control, but that would cause problems for hardware and software vendors so they had to stay with it for now and just ease in some changes.

There is some cool stuff in Vista, just not worth the hassle as you said like XP bugging you all the time. Vista has a ton of popup messages to alert you when things don't go as they want it to go.

Yes it will work and install on another system, you will have to call and get a new set of install numbers from Microsoft support but currently they won't stop you from doing it. They may ask a couple of questions but you can BS them if you so desire.

Personally though I'd stay with what you have if it's working for you. If you buy a brand new PC it will come with Vista if you really want to check it out.

I just bought a brand new one a few weeks ago, that's why I can order the free upgrade. But how the heck would MS know which machine I bought it for? I do have to report the Microsoft COA number from the PC, tho - can they (do they) actually make sure you upgrade that specific copy of XP on that specific machine? Wonder if both XP and Vista can be activated at once... ahh, screw it, I'll stick with XP. \:D

Do they know? Yes they do. Do they enforce? No currently they do not. Will that change? Who knows, we get new legal laws all the time. They have the technology to know but currently do not enforce it.

You have to use the COA because you probably don't have any other legit one. Once you get the CD/DVD in your hands you can install it on whatever you want as long as you know how and it will authenticate and be legit beyond the ethics of the matter.

I was almost taken in by all the hype but dicided to
sit on the fence for a while, 6 months and then think about it again.

As it is my Home Pc's are running fine, XP pro
and i'm not arsed if i cant get Direct X 4 million lol..

I can guess that there could be some Driver / Hardware issues
i may not have accounted for nor microsoft have either.

I'm not planning to upgrade either; the requirements for "ultimate" are insane!

XP itself has grown on me, it's better than 98 which is what i came from prior...

I also have several 2k pro keys (yes, they're legit, go me!) but the only pc's that are using it are 1ghz 256mb ram machines that i need to find something to do with...

then give this a go.

Vista Transform Pack v6 Final <<-- Download page.

A friend of mine has been running it for a few weeks now

Its got a really safe install, and you dont have to go the whole hog, if its the same one.

Just a google search really.

I believe in aliens more than I believe in the USDA or any other organization approving a cancer cure; it's bad business to cure diseases ...

Not if you own the cure and nobody else has it. That's darn good business.

Remember, the USDA approves drugs only in which country?

And how many other countries are there?

LOL - I don't have left over cpu cycles

Actually not sure why but I typically shut my computer off at night when I'm done using it. Just seems a waste of energy or something.

I have two computers running it. Were there a Mac client I'd have one more. I'm someplace just short of 3 million points right now. Ian is the one we all aspire to, he has 32 million or something.

I've been doing SETI for a while, I stopped once they introduced BOINC though; it's a pain to configure in Linux :/

BOINC is a pain sometimes in Windows, too, trust me. \:D

I'd just hate to stop something I've spent almost 8 years on. Even tho I haven't found any ET's yet. \:D Cancer would be a good cause, tho (obviously) - I just wish it shared the same client that I already am running, cuz I'd've split the CPU time between them. (BTW - the Core 2 Duo is crunching like nobody's business - two projects at a time in like a half/third of the time as one on my old Athlon. )

Intel has a dual quad (8 core) that has the highest rank for a single PC on one of those sites. It runs 2 Xeon Quad core CPUs and I think they dedicated it to the process.

Tom's Hardware: "Our hopes that Vista might be able to speed up applications are gone. ...and we believe it's safe to say that users looking for more raw performance will be disappointed with Vista. Vista is the better Windows, because it behaves better, because it looks better and because it feels better. But it cannot perform better than Windows XP."

not sure how they can say

'Vista is the better Windows, because it behaves better, because it looks better and because it feels better'

and then say

'But it cannot perform better than Windows XP'

seems to be a contradiction...

Sounds awesome jgeoff; what group are you with on seti?

Yeh I'm refusing to build a pc this year, because I know they're working on cramming cores in them; figure that i'll be able to get a 2.4ghz dual quad in '08 for like $400 lol

I'm actually just in a group of 2 I started w/ a friend of mine years ago. He's still running an old box w/ Win98SE so obviously I'm carrying all the load. \:D

No one's on ours anymore, the forcing of BOINC vs the old SETI client nerfed all of our clients running at several schools in Cali; so now they don't process a thing (one of our older members is their ex server tech and got permission to waste idle processing)

See, I kept thinking that Vista was a female-dog to load after all the complaints I've been hearing! But I think that's cuz they just didn't know how to do it...

I present you, here, a short video demonstration on how to install Vista!

That makes it so much easier now.... ;\)
