i have just transferred my system to a new server. all seems to be working fine, but just now the following SQL error occurred when i tried to use the search box:

it's the search island.

It appears that your new server is running an older version of MySQL that doesn't support Boolean mode searches. You'll want to check and see what version of MySQL is actually running. It sounds like it's maybe version 3?

This the version string that mysql returns:

which version of mysql is recommended? how simple/complex is it to upgrade versions of mysql?

Your MySQL version (from that string) is 3.23.58; the lowest supported MySQL version for the UBB is 4.1 (if I recall)

my problem has been solved! within 30 minutes of my message to my VPS provider, they upgraded me to 4.1!
