Members may not like that your messing with there data?
I would just delete them, if there inactive for long periods.
Sorry i dont know the cons of modifying a "login" Name.

Sort of, but we have recently introduced display name changes on our board, and it's kinda confusing for members not to able to take usernames that happen to be loginnames. If a login name is nothing more then a login name, why block it as display name.

Yeh, but as a mod/admin if you're punishing a user with the display name "pooh" and you see someone with the username "pooh" you could jump tot he conclusion that they're the same people and thus shun someone who would otherwise have no direct coorilation to the other..
