Hi all,
Just moved across to new v7. Have had a few users ask for larger font size and one even ask if they, the users, can control their own font sizing.

Is this possible or at least to change the default font size?

And increase

font-size: 10pt;

to 12 or something.

I dont think its possible to control there font size
due to the forums being in tables and pinned down with
pt and not em << That's just css not need to panic.

If there using IE they can Zoom

CTRL + use the mouse scroll wheel

i suggest using em for the body tag, then everything else (that uses em) will be relative to whatever value you choose there. don't use pt or px (just my preference, only )

this will allow zoom and ALL will zoom proportionally.

eg: 'body' @ 0.85em/1.1em and oh say 'small' at .75 em.

since small is inside of body, it would NOT be .75 em, but instead it would be .75*0.85em(from body - essentially small is 3/4ths the size of whatever the body font size is).

that way, you can change just ONE em (body one) and all change relatively to it. this allows you to essentially clone an existing theme (say it's called 'mytheme-normalfonts' to another theme called 'mytheme-hugefonts' and just change the body css to a bigger em value and voila!) you don't have to hunt down all those specific pt values and change them.

I may be wrong, but ive been reading that you need a fixed size for the em to work from?

Give the body a fixed pt and then em has a reference to work from.

If you dont give it a base you can get mixed results.

Its working for me on my websites.

i use em exclusively in all my ubbt 711 styles and the classes inside of the body follow with relative sizes determined by the body's em value.

eric meyer has some excellent examples of 100% em solutions and why to use them. An example that's an old one, but it still applies. he mentions the 'containing div' . well the body is the ultimate containing div, so it causes all to follow.

once again, it's STILL a personal choice and i only offer it as what i prefer.

using pt and px work too. it's just more work from where i see it.

ps: i'm not 100% em. just only for fonts. i use px where size matters and for absolute/relative positioning and width,height etc.

If found unless i set a px / pt as a base, i get inconsistency's.

In the end, i found as explained above to be my
best solution.

How come? I was trying to make a politically correct CSS site
you know the disabled stuff etc..

And the common word seems to be, forget it,
you can do it but it will look so poo.

CSS and Browsers just haven't settled enough for this to be
a practical road to take just yet.

they KEY is that you got it to work for your site and that is a good thing.

there are just different ways to do things and the nice thing is that every day the browsers get their sh*t together (cough IE cough) to finally start adhering to standards.

would be nice if we didn't have to put in IE hack or NS6 or whatever hacks, just for browsers that don't adhere to w3c or like to have their own DOM definition(s).

and font stabilisation ??

there are some caveats (that can be worked around, if you know what's happening -- and you don't accommodate really OLD browsers)

also, it's good to note that a 1em verdana X is different than a 1em Arial in size. so size + font matters.

But if you want to standerdise what it looks like
use pt or px

That's why on my web pages i'm using the yahoo hack
to attempt to standardise font sizes across browsers.

well, i almost agree with you with one thing to add though.

px will vary in actual measured size by whatever resolution the user has for their monitor, while pt = 1/72inch which is absolute.

so, if you really want to be EXACT same size on any monitor, you use pt over px.

fyi, users can adjust font sizes through their browser, making them smaller or larger based on their preferances; this is available through most modern browsers and is generally found under "view" as "font size".

Sorry to disagree but I believe that EM is the way to go to allow the user to change font size based on their own eyesight/preference. Using one of the fixed methods does not lend itself to WAI conformance.

I could be wrong but this site should have more information on the subject.

I'm learning like everyone else but i can share my findings.
which i found to be helpful.

Web Accessibility Initiative - that's what i was saying earlier, that to create such a site there are side effects, one i mentioned earlier is that to get the WAI Badge if you like the site is so basic in construction its not practical to try, as the results will be disappointing.

Ive like many done alot of reading on the internet about the correct way to go, a base line to get things on a standard road for presentation purposes. And to me there is a war of words on the internet about the best practices. Nothing is definitive in the right way.

I draw my conclusions from the magazines i have delivered and the so called expert columns, with that practising the results too.

Sir Dude your right about the pt (I do get confused with the million options in CSS)

So following and reading the advice over the net and my magazines and testing PERSONALLY i have found that by setting a BASE this can standardise the font size results.

Different browsers - have display different sizes for (em)

So when working towards a WAI site,
its always going to look different per browser.
If that's okay for you then that's fine

I like things to stay the same, so i wont go down a totally em road, i have proven to myself a pt / pix base then em up from there will standardise the font output.

My 25 cents worth lol

No doubt, each designer has to make his/her own decisions. There are some that have or want a specific artistic look that just will not look good if you're not running in the size and browser they want and they're fine with it.

Even WAI is not in agreement on some of their requests and is ongoing in recommendations.

I try to use some of it but I'm not going to go crazy over it unless I have a valid request to do so.
