I thought clearing the cache would reset the total # views next to the "comments" link on the portal page items. Obviously not.

How do I reset these since I already know they're all me! Thanks.

AFAIK you can't remove them without going into the actual database and manually modifying the count. They are auto generated on purpose for tracking.

Thanks nt. Can I change this count from inside Dreamweaver? Is it difficult to get to the database? I'd like to start off with a true #, that's all. Bye.

No not really from Dreamweaver. It is not a Website entry, it is stored in a MySQL database table.

You would have to access it via SQL commands from the Administrator Control Panel or a 3rd party tool that allows access to the MySQL database, or a SHELL account on the system.

Sorry I don't know the commands right off hand to clear that for you or I'd help you. I don't currently have a local copy installed for testing. Perhaps Rick or one of the other guys here can assist you with that. (it's possible there is a method from within control panel but if there is I don't recall ever seeing it).

Hang in there and I'm sure one of the other guys can assist you with the correct commands to clear the view count.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I know how to get into MySQL database from the webhost control panel. But seems I could get there an easier way; maybe from our ubb forum control panel.

In the meantime, I've got to drop a gov application off to my son so I should return in an hour. I'll check back then.

BTW, what is AFAIK? I work at the Air Force Academy but I don't think the AFA is for that! \:\)

Thanks for being here today. I don't usually work on the forum stuff until the weekend but took a day off today. Thank you for your help. Later,

AFAIK - As Far As I Know

To be honest if you are unsure about how to edit a MySQL database, I would leave well alone - if you make a mistake you can take your whole site down.

BACK UP BACK UP BACK UP

Before your play / change anything that's not a function,
backup first, if it goes wrong all the work time and effort
is out the window any your going to have to start again.

Personally i wouldn't worry about those views.
There going to change as soon as some one looks at a topic.

If it isnt broke don't fix it ;\)

Thank you Mark and Ian. Good advice.

But, since my topic was "Clearing Cache," what exactly does this do? I clicked the button but it didn't seem to make a difference with anything visible.

2 parts

Cache
Is like a buffer that sent to a users machine.
So they dont have to pull down the information again and again.

Sometimes to see the results you require
we clear the cache to get the most up to date results.

If there was no cache everything would run slower.

But your ok to clear the cache when you want to see
any changes you may have made in the cp.

So its a clear cache and page refresh ;\)

Example : if i changed the number of say members to appear as
top posters, viewed the main index again they may look
the same as previously.

But clear the cache forces you browser to get the latest
information from the cache ;\)

Hope that helps.

1. Never, ever, ever, edit your UBB files from within a web editing program; it will add its own formatting on what it THINKS needs to be added (frontpage for example will add a bunch of meta lines); these will break things. If editing your UBB files please only use notepad or wordpad (or some other text only editor).

2. to edit mysql you use a script capable of editing them; most isp's use PHPMyAdmin; editing the MySQL databases is beyond the scope of the UBB, hence the inability to do it from within the UBB (other than the line query section, but you'd need to know the query to update things and these aren't as simple to people as just pasting them in).
