I think this has been mentioned several times; but I agree again none the less...

Your opinion of a user can change over time; as users mature... We have a lot of "young" users who ask some of the stupidest things, but they tend to grow in their knowledge and tend to turn around...

Something like allowing you to rate that member again in say
6 months or so.

Many a time a member has registered as new,
said the wrong thing,
and gets rated into sub zero.

And with in 2 months turns out to be a asset to the site.
But still has a rating of 1

I agree

Well, if you rate them twice it kind of skews the whole aspect of a rating; being able to "change" your rating would keep it one rating per user...

Well I've said it before and I'll say it again. The whole algorithm for voting is WEAK (IMHO) Currently someone that has 50 (5 Star) votes can drop to a 4 by a SINGLE vote by anyone, including a new person that signed up just to give a vote of 1

That is not good and I think other weighted features should be included as part of the algorithm such as How long has the user voting been a member, how many posts do they have (not a deciding factor alone), How many votes do they have, How many 5 star votes do they have, etc... Take a lot of things into consideration before just skewing someones rating.

I currently have 2 Mods that have 3 stars because each got mad at the other and posted 1 star votes for each other. (perhaps even signed up another account just to vote)

Regardless, the system needs an OVERAHAUL

OVERAHAUL \:\)

Why cant we just change it as we want too ;\)
Today i think they deserve 5 stars
And tomorrow maybe not.

Every year + 1 star ;\)

Million variations of what we want.

I always thought to myself that "Trusted" rather then "Rated" would work better but that's just me?

I get you and I'm also open to new wording, ideas as currently we might turn them off as they really don't have much value for newbies or old timers.

Sad part is that due to the mistake last year where we lost all Admin/Mod accounts I restored the stars and votes as best I could and now due to some fighting they're screwed up again for some users.

Oh well, what can you do.

Well, the reason it drops down to 4 from 5 is because the overall average isn't 5 after a negative vote...

I think we need to add in "half" ratings... So the user would be a 4.5 ;)...

No I fully understand that, BUT 2 votes of 1 will drop you to 4 even if you have 50 solid 5 votes. So I still say the algorithm is too basic (not easy, not cheap code, just too basic) (IMHO)

I spent some time thinking about this last night (after I drew up specs for a simple pagination script for my articles script) and thought of this...

Have it so that it still works off rounding, but rounds to the tenths place, so if your rating is say 4.7 it will round to 4.5, and if it's 4.8 it'll round up to 5 stars... Then if it's 4.2 it rounds to 4 stars, and 4.3+ gets 4.5 stars... (or we can keep the full stars we have now, and do much the same thing, where .5 or above rounds up, or below .5 rounds down)

Personally a duration has to be agreed on first.
As i really don't see the point in waiting for any length of time.

If i read a post, and think that that member has been helpful
then i would rate them high.

And if hes upsetting members rate them low.

And everyone else would too.
And then encourage a member to change there ways?

But because our opinions of a member can change by there last post that's what i think should be the trigger or a max of
24 hrs. 1 vote per day.

Once a duration has been agreed on then the algorithm
can be thrashed out.

my thoughts \:\)

PAGING RICK....

What are your thoughts on this (since you're the one that codes it) ;\)

Currently I think some users don't use it for similar reasons I've complained of, others use it and may be happy with it (or not know the difference), and then there are a few of us spammer posters that have ideas on the subject which we'd like to banter about some if that's okay with you.

I still think that the duration of a Rated vote is locked for needs to be the first step to improving what there is?

If we don't sort the duration then the algorithm inst going to be that easy to resolve?

Personally i would go for 1 per day. (Change of vote per member)

As it stands 1 vote for life,
isn't a TRUE Rating vote at all.
If its hight or low don't matter.

As mentioned it needs Attention.

1 vote per member per day.

To make it work you have to think of the offender?
What i mean by that is if someone wanted to abuse the system,
then having only 1 vote per day isn't going to spoil it for the many.

The point being that we only want to use the rate feature
to be vindictive or genuine praise currently. where it should
reflect to others the current feelings from other members about
that member. if that can not be achieved then why have it
switched on at all?

Obviously i havent thought far enough ahead about the algorithm
and how that would work, but for me 1 vote per day lets you
change your feeling towards members.

Lets face it,
you don't get more than on member wanting you to rate them 1 at the same time lol.

Feedback ??

Did anything ever come of this?

I have a user that rated someone a 1 instead of a 5 by mistake and wants me to change it. Must I dive into the database?
