Would it cause problems to use the same SQL database for 7.2 as I do for 6.5? The new tables will have a different prefix, but would there be any other problems with this?

Nope, no problems. Many hosts only allow for a single database, so you'll be fine. Once you're all finished with the upgrade and everything looks good, all of the old tables can be dropped.
