Hi,

I'm in the process of setting permissions while I'm doing the installation of the board ... or at least I think I'm setting them, I have little boxes to tick that say Owner/Group etc (complete non technical newby here).

I'm up to the line in the installation instructions that says "files within the styles/ directory: set permissions to 0666" but when i open the styles directory there is another directory for images. Do I tick the boxes in it? Also in the same place is an Index.html thingy, do I tick it's boxes?

Any help would be appreciated \:\)

cheers
Djuma

**Editted to add ... and down further it says "directories within the gallery/default directory: set permissions to 0777 " do I tick the boxes in the gallery/default directory as well?

sub folders should be 777, files in sub-folders should be 666.

if the index files aren't chmodded, the permission checker will spew an error; so where they don't have to be, it'd be good to just get an "ok" in the permission checker.

Uh oh,

I think I've done something wrong. I finally got my forum up and running today. Most things seem to be working okay, but when I clicked on the "permission checks" bit it came up with a lot of fails in the images directory as well as templates and languages.

Should I be going through and changes the permissions on all the files in them? And what should I be changing them to?

Thanks in advance for any help.

cheers

Set the folders to 777 and files inside to 666 .

If the script does not have permission to write to these folders such as templates, images and languages you will not be able to update and add to them from within threads.

Most things will run fine without these permissions; however things such as the language or template editor won't allow you to make changes; and the automated upgrade script will croak when needing to modify/purge files...

Its a good idea to make sure they're all green lighted though ;\)

Mine was a simple plea "Rick, I'd do more if I had access to do so" ;)... Then again, that got me roped in to doing the FAQ stuff for 7.3 lol... Though I think it's ultimately done for now ;\)

sure \:\)

Most ftp packages should allow you to bulk select a large number of files and right click on them to change permissions.

Or often if you change the folder above it will often say do you wish to change the permissions of the files within.

I use WS_FTP, and that is easy to bulk change \:\)

It doesn't seem to work with this one ... I'm just using the one that comes with Windows \:\) I can select all the files, but not change the permissions once I have.

Well, it's not a full featured client; so things like chmodding can be quite the chore ;\)

There are plenty of free ftp packages around - although I would recommend WS_FTP Pro.

You are best off with a 'proper' ftp package, and even paid for ones are not that expensive, especially when you consider the time saving element.
