I have been maintaining a forum version UBBThreads 6.5.5 for 1.5 yrs and the members have recently (past 2 weeks) been experiencing slowdowns and occasionally receiving this error:

"We cannot proceed.

My webhost states that it may be a problem with my connection string, but that just doesn't sound right (why now after over a year?). While I check that, are there any other possible causes?

The MySQL server has crashed or cannot be contacted; hence the error complaining about not being able to contact it...

Often means the site has become busier than the server can handle. Usually the server can be tuned better, though sometimes an upgrade is in order.
