Incidentally I would like to see this as a group option, so that only particular groups are allowed to remain invisible. Perhaps admins / paying group, so it is a benefit rather than a right.

I'd agree with that - allow Admin and Mods (and selected groups) to remain invisible but keep the standard users from opting out.

Thanks Ian - I created the site when I bought a Morgan Aero 8 as there were only resources for the traditional wooden frame Morgans.
Despite the external aesthetics, the Aero 8 is a very modern car, all the way down to the 4.8 litre BMW supplied V8. This was what made me decide to buy one but also the reason many traditional Morgan enthusiasts don't embrace the new car.
Being invisible is something that most users like; the incentive to them is privacy. However this means that the number of actual people who appear to be online is lower than it really is. You can't incentives your users not to go invisible to help attract new members, because they don't care. But by installing this hack you have given users a clear incentive to not be invisible. And the result of that is that more users appear to be online, and that helps to convert new users as they see how active a forum really is.
