Mozilla has finally set a date for the official launch of Firefox 3 - which open sourcers hope will set a world record for most ever downloads in a day.

Firefox 3.0 will be ready for download from next Tuesday - 17 June. But the big day, dubbed Download Day, could be delayed if a serious bug is uncovered at the last minute. The browser claims to be quicker, more stable and to make it easier to set bookmarks.

Mozilla hopes to get at least 1.6 million downloads within 24 hours and set a new Guinness world record. It hopes Firefox fans will organise parties and get people to sign pledges to download the browser. Mozilla claims to have received over 40,000 pledges from the UK and more than 180,000 from the US.

Firefox accounts for some 20 to 30 per cent of browser market share, depending on whose figures you believe. It is the most popular of the alternative browsers - those that are not pre-installed on PCs.

I have been using Ubuntu and just upgraded to Hardy heron. It came loaded with Firefox 3 b preloaded with it. Two weeks ago it upgraded my Firefox to 3.0b5 and a few days ago it said i had a new update for Firefox. At that time I check the version of my current version and it indeed said version 3.0b5. I thought the upgrade would have been to their rc2 but it wasn't. The current version it tells me now is version 3.0, no beta. It is fast and has some cool new things. I am just waiting for people to update those plugins and style I used in version two. Other than that I have been enjoying Firefox 3

BTW - went to this site and couldn't see the date mentioned. Just said 'late June'. So not sure if the date has been delayed.

This page states that "Download Day" ( woo hoo! :sarcastic_woo_hoo: ) starts on June 17th at 10 a.m. PDT so I think that's 18:00 UK time.

I don't understand what's happening with the drop down on the address bar. It seems to have random bookmarks listed in it and when I delete them it just fills up with more. Maybe I should delete all my old info, cookies, cache, etc. and start a fresh.

It is noticeable faster than Firefox 2. I'm lovin' it so far.

From the CNET video:
"...FireFox 3 is without a doubt the fastest browser available..."

I got myself upgraded; I'm hoping that my extensions and themes are updated soon for ffox3...

I guess 100mb is better than 200mb memory use lol

I've downloaded it. I want to be one of the cool kids. It's far too grey for my tastes on OSX so I have a neato theme as well, Classic Compact.

So far the US has downloaded it the most at 1,118,300 copies shocked I am sure some are duplicates and will be weeded out for the records.

I too am hoping Noia extreme gets updated soon laugh

I'll wait for my extensions to come available before downloading. Those are the sole reason for me using firefox on a regular basis. The browser itself doesn't impress me.

Does it allow multiple home page tabs like IE7? I like clicking on IE and it loads all the pages I usually check out.

You can set it a couple of ways. Open up each page you want set in a separate tab. Go to tools->preferences and main tab were you usually set your home page. You can click the option to set all pages which will just separate all the url's with a |. Or you can set a bookmark folder and it will use the bookmarks you have in that folder wink

Lol...

I have several extensions that don't have a ff3 port yet, so I googled most of them looking for beta's; but only found a few...

I guess if I didn't delete one of my sourcecode editors I could have just changed the min version on them and wadded through horrid waters of crashes, but I figured i'd wait for the time being wink...

After today's update, all I'm really missing as far as components go is:
Theme: Noia Extreme
Plugins: Morning Coffee, PayPal Plug-In

Someone loves Mozilla - seems they've helped him to make a paycheck wink

Code execution vulnerability found in Firefox 3.0

Quote:
It’s not all about world records for Firefox 3.0.

Just hours after the official release of the latest refresh of Mozilla’s flagship browser, an unnamed researcher has sold a critical code execution vulnerability that puts millions of Firefox3.0 users at risk of PC takeover attacks.

According to a note from TippingPoint’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) , a company that buys exclusive rights to software vulnerability data, the Firefox 3.0 bug also affects earlier versions of Firefox 2.0x.

Technical details are being kept under wraps until Mozilla’s security team ships a patch.

According to ZDI’s alert, it should be considered a high-severity risk:

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, permitting the attacker to completely take over the vulnerable process, potentially allowing the machine running the process to be completely controlled by the attacker. TippingPoint researchers continue to see these types of “user-interaction required ” browser-based vulnerabilities - such as clicking on a link in email or inadvertently visiting a malicious web page.

It looks very much like the vulnerability researcher was hoarding this vulnerability and saving it for Firefox 3.0 final release to make the sale.

In the absence of a fix, Firefox users should practice safe browsing habits and avoid clicking on strange links that arrive via e-mail or IM messages.

There are no reports of this issue being exploited but, if you are worried about being at risk of drive-by attacks, consider using a different browser.
