I'm using ipowerweb as a hosting company. I just downloaded PHPbb to test out the product. Performance seems really bad. Pages in my 5 post forum take a long time to refresh and it's just slow. Anyone out there care to suggest a hosting company / package that they feel is good for hosting forums. Also I assume that once a forum reaches a certain size then it's time to move to a virtual host and then later to a dedicated host. I realize there are no hard and fast rules but would anyone care to suggest some guidelines as to when it might be good to move away from a shared server.

Thanks in advance.

Richard

From past discussions, many of our customers use webintellects.com.

A lot of us have moved away from webintellects - great people service, but the servers were overloaded and the software was dated.

I'm using a dedicated server from alphared.com now - great speed for a decent price. Their VPS's look nice too.

I build my own 1 Unit Rackmount boxes and run then right from my house and totally host my own and others web sites.

I got tired of paying others for machines I could build and run cheaper and have total control and ease of mind.

I currently have 16 servers and all my own routing and switching stuff as well as UPS system.

Yeh, but lockman, I doubt most people can afford the connection you have, or the cost of hardware lol...

I have a VPS with HostNuke which I've had for several years; no problems. I think Drak said he's planning to roll out new VPS plans this summer

For someone who knows nothing about this sort of thing...

Lockman, what sort of connection do you have?
(Go PM if you like smile )
Out of curiosity, how do you go about getting this type of connection?

I can't imagine it's available to non-business accounts...?

It's a commercial connection. I have a small netblock of IP's assigned through the ICAN Registry. I get bulk raw connection and do everything here my self right from the IP Gateway down to the individual services like Web, Email, Pop, SMTP, FTP, Chat, MySQL, and so on servers.

I own a small web hosting company but build commercial 1 Unit enterprise servers and custom racks to order for small businesses and places who do their own web services, sites, and email and so on.

Been into computers for 26 years and have been programming and playing all that time.

We are happy to our our board on a shared environment at NXS internet. I guess it also depends on what that shared hosting environemnt has to offer.

NXS sort of said, if we can host thousands of sites on our shared environment, we can also host big ones on it.
