I wonder if someone can explain to this simpleton about scripted windows...

ok, when I want to enter a url or email etc, I click on one of the icons above.

Now, Firefox & Opera handle this very nicely by providing the user with a nice little pop-up dialogue/form box which you can fill in, end of problem.

As we all know Internet Explorer likes to piss you off by flashing a warning bar...

Many of our users use IE, it's a fact.

So why is it, that when we click on 'file manager' a box pops up instead of the usual flashing warning bar (that IE has)?

I'm sure it's something like javascript vs whatever but I'm curious as to why two different methods are used.

Apologies if this really is a stupid question - but I need to know crazy wink

Thanks.

Do you mean the file manager here as in the upload file manager for the Gallery? or the normal Windows file explorer or???

That is built-in security from IE on purpose to prevent accidental ActiveX content from being installed without your permission as it could be done before with IE6

Well, it's JavaScript (hence SCRIPTed window)... Basically it's whining about a popup...

The file manager I'm talking about is...
When you click on reply, under the text box, you see...

'file manager' (total files : 0)

So why is it, that clicking on this link allows a box to pop up in Explorer, yet Explorer won't allow a pop-up when clicking on the chain-link icon?

Because the utility uses javascript hence "scripted window"

Giz, I think you are missing my point.
Yes I know this...

But, why isn't it the case for both? Why does file manager not cause the script alert?

becasue we use the sandard "file browser" html code which isn't javascripted to do the whole "file select" method

well you don't need to use a cript because you are using standard "file browser" html code

I guess there is no equivilent for an image or link function?

However, I use a shopping cart on one website and I am able to enter links etc., without the script alert going off confused

well, the upload handler I believe is javascript, so no

As for the boxes, they're simple text boxes, likely having a php handler on the backend...
