Is it possible? I "see" the regular forum enabled in the CP, but only the Gallery subforum is visible on the board.

Is it something I am doing wrong with permissions, or are the two subforum types incompatible?

You should be able to have both subforum types. Might be quickest for me to check this out if you open up a basic support ticket with admin info to your forum.
