Thanks for the quick fix to the 7.5.1 bugs.

Question: I'm already at 7.5.1. Is there a list of changed files that I can upload to get to 7.5.2 without having to go through the whole upgrade process?

Thanks!

When you download the zip file in the install folder is a file called upgrade_changes.txt.
It will list all the files changed by version

Hi all,

How would I go about applying to be a beta tester for version 8? Although my php/mysql skills are pretty shoddy I think I could offer some helpful input on the html/css side of things. As you can see from my forums (link below) I've customised ubbthreads' templates quite a bit in the past...

I'm not sure I would even qualify.

I run multiple versions of the Linux operating system and own my own little data center. My regular forum does on average of 250 posts a day with an average of 187 active members on a monthly basis with over 600 registered users. I'm generating over 39,000 page views per month on average as well.

I believe all beta testers are selected by Rick; at this point i think we've got a pretty large group of testers already...

As I recall, cant find it as the search function is BROKE again, that Rick said that his beta testing staff has dropped off recently and these latest releases have not been tested as much as the previous versions. He also stated that he was thinking of recruiting new beta testers.

I believe you have posted in on this conversation as well Gizmo as you replied to one or two of my posts in that thread.

you sir, are correctamundo.. matter of fact there are 'beta testers' who really don't test at all and it's been that way for quite awhile..

Well, in my case it would be more to do with checking over the template files/css styles than actually beta testing on a range of hardware, as I believe version 8 will move away from table based layouts to more modern display methods. But anyways, the offer is there.

Keen to get some jQuery loveliness bolted onto ubbthreads too and lose those pesky popup windows in favour of lightboxes, for example.

is there a way to just install the modified files? it seems like a complete install everytime.

EVEN if there was another zip that had those files we have to delete everytime..

Or is there an easier way?

You could use a differencing tool to confirm and update only changes but that might be just as time consuming as running the update. Also from time to time there are DB structure changes that just replacing new files would not make that change and the average user wouldn't know how to make the change or might accidentally do it wrong and break their site.

Even doing the file change difference can be done wrong if you're not careful. So even though there may be some users that can handle it there are probably many more that can not and it might open a can of worms for support trying to maintain different packages.

Well suppose one has to clarify that as I certainly don't recall any documentation requiring any specific feedback, code check, input, etc when Rick has added testers. Yourself and a couple others really go the extra mile and do a LOT compared to most of the rest of us though and I'll give you that in spades, but to say that others don't test at all is possibly a bit inaccurate, but then again that's my own perception and I could be wrong.

I've tested many things myself but I know I don't always provide frequent feedback, so if Rick wants or requires a more structured tester then I think that should be clarified.

Once 8.0 is getting close to an actual private beta then we'll probably look at the current group of beta testers, clarify what we need and maybe add a couple new ones if needed. We'll definitely need active testers that have some time since there will be a lot of testing to do.

I always use the upgrade script. By the time you go thru the upgrade_changes.txt file and then go thru the altertable files it would be done already.

Looking at your homepage you are on 7.5 and 7.5.2 does alter the tables.

There are some things that are just so great about ubbthreads.

One that I am not that fond off is that I would have to buy a license for every site..

I use another package, and when ever there is an upgrade, I click a button, my CP has all the ftp stuff, and it updates the software, I think of that everytime I update threads...

I'm guessing that you're referring to maybe on in like a Fantastico or other CPANEL/PLESK control panel that has certain Web Script applications that it installs.

Not sure what the licensing model is or how they get selected to be in there. Maybe something to do with fully free? Not sure.

I always test mine too. When I know its working on my test site I bring it to my live site to test in an open environment. Going in for surgery soon, but I have the time.

While we will be doing some stuff via internal FTP in version 8, permissions, etc. doing upgrades this way is a bit tough. If we were free software it would be easy peasy. Since we're not, there would need to be some sort of authentication layer so a bit more involved.

Not saying that it's out of the question that we'll do that someday, it's just there would be a few extra hurdles for us.

Rick,
Question on your comment.
Since this is a pay per license software, why is there not some validation for the license presently during a install or upgrade.
The only protection is member access. But I could give out the zip file to every person I wanted to.
I could just buy a gold license and then sell the zip for $10.00 a pop.
Seems like this would protect piracy on your end anyway.

Authorization would result in a "callback" to a license server, which would arise privacy issues... people would cry ...

I disagree, we all live with software upgrades today.
Try to reinstall windows on your box and see what happens if you don't have that 26 character string on the sticker. You will be buying a new software package.

We'd also need to do some sort of code encryption since without it, if someone really wanted to run a pirated license, they'd just remove the callback. That's not really a road I've ever wanted to go down.

Well I am not going to beat up on any beta testers.
I think the first thing people forget is they are all volunteers meaning they all work for free.
They may check out very thoroughly what they think is pertinent to the changes so they may overlook some items.

What I don't agree to is if a person want's to be a beta tester then they should also at least send a message to Rick that they don't have time to be one anymore. Or at least they don't have time to test the current beta release.

For some software that I have used in the past, my websites checks and validated everytime with the mothership... Mothership was down for a few weeks so were all of our sites then..

that was www.webscribble.com
or one similar to that...

We sure do not want to go that way either..

I see the search is working again. Why has it been breaking with every upgrade since 7.4?

I believe you have posted in on this conversation as well Gizmo as you replied to one or two of my posts in that thread.

Ummm, I didn't think I was beating up on the beta testers for one, I did however TRY to point out that "Rick" himself had stated that the beta testing program has become laxed causing more bugs not to be found before the product was released to the general public.

I personally think you should have quoted Rick as he "beat up" on his own beta testing program if your looking at it in that manner.

Not sure, I haven't done anything with it since upgrading. Was it returning errors for you, or just no results?

Tells that there are no results to display.

how I have been fixing it was just re-uploading the search file a few times and then it starts working again for some reason. This happens in my site and here that it is breaking.

I can't explain it really. I'm sure it is happening for many other users too.

To Jaisp,
I was only quoting your post to reference beta testers since this topic has a little drift off topic.
But you are correct Rick is the one that stated about low participation from the beta test group and new blood may need to be solicited for version 8.

I'd be willing to jump into the fray, but will have to wait and see what happens I guess. I've been an alpha tester with a company and have really enjoyed finding issues and working for a resolution.

Curious mark, which bugs in 7.5.2 are holding you back? I don't really see any that'd be show stoppers for an upgrade at this point (unlike 7.5 and 7.5.1)

I just like it to be as stable as possible.
It is a pain finding the time to upgrade.
Looks like Rick is on 7.5.3 already smile

We're probably going to wait a bit longer on this. Every time we put out a release it seems a couple of bugs are picked up shortly thereafter, so will give this a bit longer to see if anything else needs addressed.

Doubtful, Rick wants as few releases between now and v8 as possible; so since the current bug's aren't *show stoppers* and theres just a handful, it can be put off slightly as to ensure we don't have to have a 7.5.4 tongue

For me, since I'm having zero problems with 7.5 I'll probably just wait for the release of v8.0.

My problems only began with 7.5 so I'll upgrade as often as possible in the hope that those problems will be mitigated.

That said, it looks like I am the only one with this problem so I wouldn't worry about upgrading.

I've done it a few times recently and the upgrade path is (touch wood) very smooth.

I have a group of people who use the PM feature to respond to on ongoing discussion. There are 2200+ nested replies. When we installed the update there is no longer a place to submit a reply. It says we have exceed the 100 replies. Here is the message:

Yes you just need to edit your permissions in the control panel.
Control Panel » Site Permissions
There are now three permissions for private topics.
they are in each of the three columns about the middle of the screen.
When you expand each option you will see a note for what the permission is for.

I know that I mentioned this before in another forum and it was possible, but can secure ssl logins and CP be implemented? It just needs a way of specifying a second path for the CP and login scripts.

Most proper hosting uses a second https directory rather that a shared directory.

Then it's a matter of activating a checkbox use secure ssl logins and cp. A new box to set the https path both web and absolute path. Anyone using shared can use the same absolute path.

Only need to copy in a second https only the files mentioned.

When you look today with most ISP stopping plain mail logins and FTP and other forums like vbulletin offering secure CP and logins the feature should be available.

Thanks!

Actually, a "proper" host would generally allow SSL on the same directory as the standard web path; at least in my experience of both working for a webhost and maintaining several servers for users...

The SSL directory can be anything they choose the path to be, and, imho, should be the standard web directory...
