#231801 - 12/07/09 12:06 PM Sending email for every post?

I want to send email to all subscribers for every post. Does the latest software have this feature? If not, can somebody help me with a hack? I have an email discussion list for mass emailing, so the posts would only need to be sent to a single email address (ie not individual emails to each user).

Thanks,
Mike

I had this working in classic so I assume you could do it here.
More steps involved with threads.
Just register a bogus user. Use a nice name because it will appear in the email.

You may need to place the bogus user in a custom group so you can prohibit some functions like private messages bla bla.

Then login as the bogus user.
Edit mystuff to watch forums and select to send email notification.

Note when you register the bogus user you may not want to use the discussion email address until you have it working.
Due to emails sent for validation etc.

Then goto the control panel edit the bogus user and change the email address.

Note: I am sure I missed a couple of settings you may want to disable since this is not a real user.

Ruben,

OK, that sounds like it would work. Is there a way to disable the forum watch and thread watch for regular users? I'm sure they do not want duplicate emails. Also, I have about 750 users on my current site, so if I get more than 150 of them watching the same forum, my hosting site will suspend my outgoing email privileges.

Thanks,
Mike

yes, you'd have to modify the stock code, but it is not a LARGE modification..

unless if you 'do it right' and truly add a new forum permission (about 2 DB tables) a language file and 2 scripts.. then it might be a MEDIUM one wink

Good catch. Forgot about that.
I don't believe there is a way to enable watched topics or email notification for just one user, group or forum.
So I would say no unless someone chimes in and proves me wrong.

Note:
The new version 8 not released yet will have a feature to throttle the number of emails sent per unit of time set by the user.

In my case, my hosting service limits me to 200 emails per hour. So if I have 700 subscribers and I throttle the outgoing emails to 200 per hour, it is going to take over 3 hours just to send one message. This does not seem like a very practical solution.

I am able to create and send unlimited emails using a discussion list. It would be great if there were an option to configure each forum to send outgoing email to separate addresses, and also allow users to subscribe to the discussion lists when they select the forums they are interested in.

Thanks,
Mike

why don't they just use an RSS feed reader? it accomplishes the same thing with ZERO emails.
