I have a choice of host with the forum I'm developing (i'm purchasing and migrating a phpbb forum) and I wondered what opinion was for Linux or Windows? I am an ecommerce developer mostly, and know the cross benefits of zen cart on Linux or Windows.. wondered if UBB was the same?

I'd recommend Linux personally... And I'm sure there are some who'd recommend Windows tongue...

I have run these forums on both OS's and I can honestly say I like Linux way better as far as speed and dependability.

Cheers all. I have got to say I was leaning towards linux based on my previous luck and experience with my previous PHP sites. A client once had 1&hosting with 1&1 and it was a nightmare on Windows. Its rare to get a green light on all settings you need enabled when installing on Windows...

windows is more forgiving in the directory perm side, but that is the only 'advantage' if you even call it one..

linux wins, hands down in my book..

1&1 isn't just a nightmare on windows, their service sucks; outright...

Linux does not require the overhead that a windows server does. You can generate more speed and reliability in Linux with less resources then you can on windows.

linux. but that could be the old man in me talking. if you are not comfortable operating your server with command-lines, then you maybe better off using Windows®

Of course a person wouldn't be comfortable operating their server with command lines. Who would want to open a book and learn something when Microsoft makes everything so darn easy with a point and click operation that just anyone with a mouse can operate it.

Back during the days of Windows 3.11, Win 95, Win 98 they use to give out booklets with the operating system. Each version the books got smaller and smaller as no one even wanted to read those and now there are not even restore CD's with the stuff.

No one wants to read anything or learn anything anymore. I'm sure that this is the reason for the hangup on not having a manual for this software as only about 1% of the people that have a license would even consider looking at it.

What are you thinking anyway, LOL.

I used to have an IBM dos 1.0 book, I kept it for years as a memento, had the actual floppy in it and all.. finally purged my belongings about 7 years ago and that was one of the things to go.

Windows is by far the most popular among the 2, for plenty of software's are made for windows platform and if you used a not so popular platform it might give you a hard time on using different applications and softwares

As far as a web server is concerned Linux is by way far the best for the task.

Windows is only more popular for desktops as for my above mentioned post of lack of knowledge of computers or the will to learn something about them.

You can do many things with Linux as you can windows, You can use virtually and hardware in today's world on Linux as you can on Windows, if you take the time to understand how to do it.

You can run any software in Linux that you can run on Windows including Microsoft's Office.

Linux does not use the resources required by Windows, it does not hog up your CPU and memory like Windows does. You can get a desktop that will work and function just like Windows. The only thing is you NEED to get the idea out of your head that if you do not have a degree in Linux you will not be able to use it.

Differences between Windows and Linux is that every time a new OS comes out you don't have to pay a few hundred bucks to upgrade with Linux like you do with Windows. You don't have to worry about running the same copy on several different machines like you do with Windows. You don't have to worry about the creator of your Linux shutting your down cus you didn't import and install their latest spy ware.

Oh did I mention you can download almost ANY version and or type of Linux on the internet for FREE and it will be a legal copy. You can get far more support for Linux from the creators of Linux then you can with Microsoft. You can not call Microsoft and talk to them on the phone, they will tell you to contact whom ever you bought your computer from. They do not deal with ANY customers or end users. Linux does.
