Yep it looks like FreeType is the problem. Thanks guys!!!

Now I just got to wait on a server friend of mine to get it done for me. I lease a server but don't know squat about them. frown

finally went around the prob by getting imagemagic going. Now Captcha works.

FWIW, ImageMagick produces cleaner images than GD, IMHO...
