Our members are concerned about the shout box creating a security threat. Is this a valid concern?

I don't see it creating any more of an opportunity for hackers, spammers and trolls. Only in that the potential of attracting a few bad eggs along with a possible increase in web traffic.

Does anyone think that it would add a significant burden for the moderators?

I did a search for this but found nothing.

You could always make the shoutbox available if you are over x amount of posts.

Thanks for responding, Yarp. That sounds like a great idea. Could someone now guide me as where i might enable this feature?

You could start with:
Control Panel » Site Permissions
Can see the shoutbox
De-Select the groups you don't want.

Then you can add a special group say user2.
That can be based on:
Control Panel » Group Management
Per number of posts.
When they reach the number of posts for user2 they are promoted auto mode to see and use it.
