I've got a bit of a problem that I'm in need of some unix guru's type of help.... I think.

After fiddling with the server and messing that up, as well as finally getting it back right. I type in date and it shows me that it's 10:10am PST Jan 5th 2003. (You don't want to know what setting that to 2002 does to your forums)

Anyrate, I type date, I get the right time and date reported to me via an ssh connection to the server.

I've got both the forums and my personal preferances set to 0 hours offset, so whatever the server shows I should see via the forum.

But my forum is reporting that it's 5pm the 5th of Jan 2003.

Any ideas ??

I don't know if this will help, but I use rdate for setting the server clock, and it seems to work correctly. I use a German time server, since my server is located in Germany.

The following command prints the time from the time server ntps1-0.uni-erlangen.de:

rdate -p ntps1-0.uni-erlangen.de

The following command prints the time from the time server ntps1-0.uni-erlangen.de, and sets the system clock to it:

rdate -p -s ntps1-0.uni-erlangen.de

Thanks for the reply Dave,

Currently the system is set to mirror the time from my server groups clock, with an hourly check

"> I noticed that the system's
> date and time was off again

I added a line to crontab

37 * * * * /usr/sbin/rdate time.jtan.com >/dev/null

that sets your system's time from our time server every hour at 37 past
the hour. If your clock continues to be off, let me know."

They corrected my mess by setting the enviroment and such to refelect the time as pst, but for whatever reason the server says its the right time, but the forum with 0 offset thinks it's 8 hours ahead.

Shouldn't the forum software pass the systems time through without modification as long as both your personal and the system's offset is set to 0?

If you create a file with the following contents and run it from your browser, does it display the correct time?

<pre><?php echo date('r') ?></pre>

That's using the server's local time, which is the same thing that the UBB.threads script does.

Nope...

Mon, 6 Jan 2003 00:34:02 +0000 is what I just got with that script, and it's really 16:30 pst

Hmmmm. For some reason, your server's local time is set to GMT, rather than PST. (PST = GMT - 8)

Ok, thats about what I came up with, the part I don't understand is why would the server report the correct pst time via a ssh link, It's as if the enviroment variable is set to compensate from utc via time.jtan.com to pst for logged in users, but the forum is getting it direct.

I guess the best thing to do would be to put in a global offset through the forum and leave things well enough alone.
