I have my gallery set up, and now when I upload an image in the gallery, it appears as the dreaded red X. Is there a setting on the forum or server I'm missing here?

Could be one of the paths are incorrect in the ubb control panel.
You can check a couple of things.
Check the properties of the red x to see what url it is looking at.
Check the actual directory and see if the file is actually there.
Browse to the actual file and see if it appears.
Check the folder file permissions,they should be 777 for gallery and I believe the default directory under gallery.

Also the url to your site may be helpful.

The directory the forum is pointing to is /forum/gallery/45, but in my file manager, 45 does not exist. The file manager shows me /forum/gallery/default

I have already CHMODed the folders to 777, but there is no /45 under the gallery folder. The forum sees the gallery as forum #45 if that makes a difference.

That looks correct. It should make a folder called 45 under the gallery folder.
So if you have the permissions set to 777 for
Gallery
Gallery/default/full
Gallery/default/medium
Gallery/default/thumbs
Then it should have created a folder called 45 with the file.
And permission check in the UBB control panel should show a ok for each one of them. Might want to check to see if a error for gallery/45 is in there.

Only other item I can think of is the graphics library.
It may not exist.

Which one did you select in the gallery settings?

So where in the file structure should the forum have created the /45 folder? would it be

/forum/gallery/45/thumbs

or

/forum/gallery/default/thumbs/45

The only option it's giving me is GD2. I am not positive if GD2 is even installed. This is my first Server (semi-private) as opposed to the shared hosting I used before. Rick helped me get the server set up.

1. create /forum/gallery/45 dir
2. create /forum/gallery/45/thumbs dir
3. create /forum/gallery/45/medium dir
4. create /forum/gallery/45/full dir

CHMOD the thumbs, medium and full dirs to 777 ( as needed ). you may be able to leave it at 755 if your php isn't running as 'nobody'

Although I tried this once before and it didn't work, it's working now!! Not sure what's different, but I'm not going to complain either. Thank you very much!!

btw, i have seen a gallery forum get created before ( 7.5.6 ) and a directory _NOT_ get created for it

warnings / errors should be issued, instead of the forum owner thinking the new gallery forum is good to go, but not..

this is a buglet that i will be addressing in 7.6
