Hi,
Is it possible to close forums to new posts but still leave them up so that people can view posts already there?

Yes there are several ways to do that... one is you can change permissions for user groups to 0 (can't post new topics) and (can't respond to topics). The other is to lock the posts in that forum (takes a bit of doing) there is another way but I can't think of it off the top of my head at the moment. I am sure the others here will have a better/faster way to do it though.

Thats pretty much the way to go.
The only other option would be to create a custom group with forum permissions off for topic creation and replies.
Then use the member management search and use the action at the bottom to move them all to the new group.
But you would also need to change the default user group for new registered users to the new group.
The only advantage of this is you could preserve the existing user group permissions that allows posting and then manually move members to the group again to allow posting on a user basis.
But you do the reverse and create a group that allows posting and manually move members to that group.

Thank you both. Changing the permission to 0 is exactly what I needed.
