Currently your board is using version 7.5.4.2.
There has been a discovery of a big security hole found in all of the version 7 series. And it should be updated. They can either upgrade to the latest version or install the patch for their version.

It is a big security risk!!!!

Does this upgrade change the interface?
Honestly, I don't like this version with avatars positioned above the text - and I fear the admins of my forum don't want to change our "version" due to this reason.

The upgrade patch only addresses the security hole.
However the upgrade from version 7.5.42 to v7.56 does have some changes.
But i am unclear on what you are looking for to change.
The interface is much the same . you would need to look at the change log to determine the benefit.

As far as avatar above the posting that sounds like you changed your preferences.
As A guest at the site without registration I don't see that.

Goto
Mystuff> edit preferences
Scroll to Post Layout:
Select User info on side.
Submit and see if that is what you want.
