Can someone tell me exactly what needs to be done to upgrade a 6.5.5 thread install to the version 7 install?

I have copied over my forums from the current folder into a "New" folder. I also copied my database to a second one, edited all of my config files, set the directory permissions, etc. and have verified that I now have a complete test site.

In other words, let's assume you have a 6.5.5 install and configured correctly and now you want to install the latest version of 7 (currently beta3).

What exactly would you do?

Thanks,
Fred

First step is actually installing version 7 using the install guide from our documentation page. Once you have version 7 installed then you just need to download the threads_import.zip file from the Members area. In here you'll have a threads_importer.php script that you place into your importers directory. Bring this up in your browser and it will ask you some information on your 6.5.5 database to do the import. Once you fill that in it will begin importing all of your data into 7.0.

Rick,

Do you "install" this by going through the entire install.php file and installing to another database or your original (backed up) database? Or, when you say install do you mean to copy all of the files over and then bring up the importer?

I guess I'm having trouble understanding exactly how to do an "upgrade" from 6.5.5 to version 7. This is my first time trying to do an "upgrade" and I'm not sure of all of the steps, it seems a little confusing.

I guess what's confusing on this one is it's not like a normal upgrade. It's actually an import just like importing to a new product. The database structure is completely different so it's actually taking all of your old data and importing it into the new tables.

if you have access to a new database that's probably the easiest and safest way as you can just nuke the database if you run into issues and want to start fresh without needing to worry about touching your old tables from 6.5.5.

Okay, I'll give it a try.

Thanks,
