Our forum was originally stored on (the names are fictitious to protect the innocent) website.com. Later the forum was moved to a separate server (reason, unknown), forums.website.com.

The original links are not accessible without some laborious work-around.

Suggestions?

Which links are you talking about? Internal links in posts?

You could start with the transfer guide.
http://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthre...ansf#Post178189
Or at ubbwiki
http://www.ubbwiki.com/index.php?title=Migration_Guide
Even if you still are at the same host most rules apply.
Since the paths have changed.
if it is at the same host just a new path it should be a simple edit to fix it.
just edit config.inc.php

PS,
You have never posted the url to your site. So it is difficult to look at what your issues are.

Add this to a .htaccess file on the main site:
Code:
# Redirects #
redirect 301 /forum http://forums.mysite.com/forums
redirect 301 /forum/ http://forums.mysite.com/forums/

This will redirect anyone trying to access forum (or forum/) to the subdomain.

I'd like to state though that I'd never separate data off of the main site, search engines treat them as separate entities so the weight to mysite.com will be less than if forums.mysite.com where on the main domain.
