Well, I'm now looking at VPS options as my current one is going to be unavailable soon; I'm curious what your experiences are with any VPS hosts... Looking for something that won't cost my first born as well...

I've spent quite a bit of time looking around at hosting. Are you looking for great support, managed, unmanaged?

Linode is completely unmanaged, but they are cheap and fast and their support is quite fast. You also can spool up any OS quite quickly which is nice if you are trying out different environments.

Unmanaged, support will only ever be contacted for billing/downtime; prefer remote reboot and kvm but not necessary.. Business is pretty slow so I'd like to try to keep costs down...

Only need ~512gb ram, single core processor ~1500mhz, 20gb+ hd; I use it for all of m dev stuff :/

Well Linode is about the best cheap option out there. Based on your specs you make it sound like you are looking for a semi dedicated.

You can get what you need at Go Daddy for around $21 a month.

If you go that route, please consider getting it via my affiliate account by by clicking here.

That link will get you 30% off your order until the 27th of this month. Their normal price for the "economy" VM is $30 a month. Use the promo code and bring it down to $21.

A hint about Go Daddy is to ALWAYS start to place an order online, fill out most of the order form and then don't finish the order. You will get an e-mail within a couple days with a nice discount offer. (Not sure how far you need to go with the order process to trigger their saving your e-mail.) Or cut things short and just call their sales number. They will ALWAYS offer a nice discount off their posted pricing. If they do not offer it outright, then ask and then they will.

So you really do not need to use my link to get a nice discount, but then that will not put any money in my pocket either. So use the link. wink

I've been on a full dedicated server with them for about 3 years now. I've been with a few hosts over the years and support with Go Daddy is about as good as I've seen anywhere and better than most. On the rare occasion that I need anyone, I get to talk to a human after only a few mins wait (at most) on the phone and they handle whatever I need promptly. If I need to reboot, not likely, it can be done via my control panel without needing anyone.

Worth looking into.

No offense but Godaddy is one host I avoid.
Maybe a vps with godaddy has better support than a regular shared hosting account.
But my past experience with shared hosting is they leave much to be desired.

None taken.

Good point about the level of support being proportionate to how much you pay. One thing they use as a selling point for a dedicated server account is that you get a higher level of support over a shared account.

So I'd expect that a VPS is somewhere in between? Not sure as I have no direct experience.

There are pros and cons going with one of the largest hosts on the planet. I can see how you can do very well going with a smaller outfit, but the trick is finding the one that is nimble on their feet that can provide a consistent level of performance and support.

Lol, I'll pass at GoDaddy, if they can't get their collective heads out of their respected tuccus' about SSL certificates and I've had to repair script messes on their servers before; not too interested at trusting them with my files...

I'm looking at Interserver now, $12/mo gets me a VPS using about what I was before, and they have some fairly inexpensive dedicated machines as well should I need to end up that route...

So many different options it's kind of crazy, I also looked at Mochahost and BurstNET but reviews about their services turned me away...

I love these kind of topics as I get to learn of new options of which I was not previously aware.

Interserver has competitive pricing from what I just looked at. It would be interesting to learn of your experience if you go with them.

And you are SOOOO right about the number of options. Too damn many.

This is due to the fact that it is so easy to get into the game.

Rent a dedicated server somewhere (or co-locate in someone's data center), open shop and Poof! You're a hosting company. wink

One of my business partners had been using a reseller account with Interserver for some time; I've read some pretty good things about them and made the plunge not too long ago...

To keep costs down I don't need like CPanel and stuff, I do just fine with Webmin/Virtualmin, so that saves a chunk of cash each year...

For someone who needs a lot of support we've been with Dreamhost for 10 years and they have done a pretty admirable job. Downtime is inevitable anywhere, but we've never been down for a server issue, just network. You can get root access on their VPSs. I've found we have outgrown them though.

By far the best deal on hosting for dedicated I've found right now that seems to have a good reputation is Future Hosting, and I have done a ton of price/review shopping. Consider these specs.

Server: Single Processor intel Xeon E3 $129.95 $0.00
Bandwidth: 10000 GB
CPU: E3-1230 3.20 GHz
RAM: 16 GB + $25.00 $0.00
Drive #1: 500 GB SATA 7.2k RPM + $10.00 $0.00
Drive #2: 500 GB SATA 7.2k RPM + $15.00 $0.00
Drive #3: — $0.00 —
Drive #4: — $0.00 —
RAID: RAID 0 + $40.00 $0.00
OS: CentOS 64-bit $0.00 —
Control Panel: — $0.00 —
Term Per Month Total
Recurring Total: Monthly $219.95 $219.95
Setup Fee: $0.00
Item Total: $219.95

I challenge anyone to find a better deal then that on that processor with that much ram. Most places want at least $40/4gigs. You can get 12 gigs additional for $25. They had a server on there last week I wish I grabbed, quad core xeon, 6x 300 gig 15k drives, Raid 10 card, 24 gigs ram for $229/month.

I have a friend who works at Razor Servers; if I was going for a dedi I'd stop by there, they have some pretty nice prices

Well, you won the challenge wink Very good prices. Which is amazing because I've looked at colo prices and most places want $100 for a 2U.

Not to derail your thread, but this is the one of the things I need to take into consideration. If you have a site that is mostly regional traffic, does it make sense to have your server closest to the majority of your traffic. Or does the speed of light not care?

I'm not sure it really matters now adays... I mean, if you're going to target US users, by all means, have a US based server; but like say if your users are west coast USA and you rent east coast space it doesn't necessarily matter at this point.

Just sayin.

Give ExpressHosting a look. I went from a VPS on one Host Provider to a Shared account on ExpressHosting and performance actually improved. VPS accounts are also available but the Shared accounts are scalable too. Prices are very competitive and the service is excellent, to say the least.

Figured after I edited out ZoeMoistner's spam I'd chime in that I've been using a 3 slice (1128mb ram, 75gb storage, 2700gb bw on a 9mbps line) CentOS OpenVZ (would recommend kvm/Xen) VPS with Interserver in their Secaucus, NJ datacenter (the one in Los Angeles, CA is just a colo) for the last year; it's pretty good, i ordered it with no control panel and then slapped webmin on it for free.

Go look at their system, it's a predetermined dedicated section of resources.

It's an interesting little system... I signed up for an OpenVZ VPS due to its ability to ensure resources that I buy are my resources (does a more militant job) but it doesn't normally have swap space, luckily though they run the latest build and i have a swap on it... I may end up having to upgrade soon, but at least it's pretty seamless...

How does a resellers account work? DO you get a template for hosting etc, are there additional charges if you sell a webhosting package?

Reseller accounts generally just have their own space to divvy, I've heard of some offering a storefront but I wouldn't hold my breath on that part
