I had to change the password to my mysql database, but I can't update it in the control panel. how do I do this?!

Edit the config file in the includes directory with a plain text editor.

Text edit your includes/config.inc.php to update it with the new information.

i thought the password was encrypted, but that random string of characters WAS the password, lol

The passwords to your user accounts are stored encrypted. the random string you are asked to create, is the "salt" for that encryption.

I believe that what Isaac meant to say is that the passwords used between the database and user cookies are naturally salted.

but I don't like salty cookies I'm not going to say coffee hit my monitor, but some did get projected as I chuckled while taking a sip and getting an email notification of this...

A lot of the time sites just use the password that came with their account, which is generally one that has passed through a random password generator; in fact, when creating a new MySQL user account there is a generate button that does just this.
It does look random enough to make one think it may be encrypted or encoded at first, I totally agree.
