Is there a way to do this or do we have to mod the install?

Basically, if someone isn't logged in I don't want them to be able to see the left or right column.

Best thing would be if we had an option to show them or not if the user was logged in. That way I could leave things like Forum Info, but things we would want to keep private like who's online, top posters, calendar, shout box, etc. we could. Because most of the info we want to keep private I would opt to have an all or nothing as my second choice.

I think it says somewhere in the portal
settings that they will always appear on the
portal page Left and Right.

So if a user has the right de-selected,
they will see it at the portal page.

I think its going to be a hack,
as there isnt any options in the CP.

It would be a nice touch to have the option smile

How about a "Require Login" column on the portal layout page? It could be a yes/no option for each piece of content.

I already suggested adding security to the content islands. That way they only show up to groups that have access to them including user and guest.. etc..
