Bummer. I've just heard back from CIHost that NO they won't upgrade the machine I'm on to php4! They are 'running tests' and when they're ready they'll upgrade all their machines at the same time!

So.... everybody that is with them, PLEASE bombard them with requests for the upgrade.

Hrm. That's a crappy host. PHP4 is a confirmed stable product with several patches and additions making it better then the inital release.

But Scream said PHP W3T should run in cookie mode on PHP3 just fine. If you really wanted to use sessions then you could install PHPLIB and write yourself a little header library which would handle PHP4 function calls to PHPLIB.

Most of them seem to suck pretty bad..

iserver.com was ok and vserver.com use to suck but I heard they are better now ..

Dedicated server is the way to go........

That's the story with many hosts. PHP4 may be a "stable" product, but server admins have to weigh the needs of the server and the server community with the demands for the newest technologies. Its a VERY delicate balance to port over to PHP4 from PHP3, and the act to get them to run side by side during a transition is admirable indeed. But when it comes down to it, most PHP3 scripts can fail miserably under PHP4, and it more or less saves a headache to not upgrade for the time being until all your tests are complete.

Notice the line that says read the "VERY" few incompatiblities. There are more imcompatiblities between running a PHP4 script on PHP3.

And to further support this point is the fact that I've migrated 3 dedicated servers to PHP4 from PHP3. One was my own site which required no changes and the other two were intranat servers at Ford and on only one of those machines I needed to update like 2 scripts and that was the "{$somevar" problem. I changed it to "\{$somevar" and it worked.

If it's not already installed on their servers they will do it for you ASAP. Their tech. support is outstanding.
I now have 3 sites with them. I refuse to go anywhere else.

I got to know Matthew (the CEO) when I asked for a PhP GD.mod install. He ended up recompliing the servers to fill this request. Actually he upgraded to versions I didn't even know were out, and made sure they were backward compatable.

Anyway they are good people. Worth a look.

I think the biggest headache in the porting is anyone who uses {$varname syntax like Cardoe says. (FastTemplates uses this very syntax, so you either get the latest update or patch it yourself). very few people really get any incompatibilities in the upgrade.
The reality is a lot of admins aren't willing to risk it though. CI Host is filled with those types of admins. Not enough demand, so why should they do the work and risk having irate customers who's scripts may malfunction?

I just looked at this Liquid Web and, after reading just a little bit, I might decide to switch to them from Pair. I noticed you can get a $40.00 referral bonus for referring customers. Have you set yourself up for that? If so, please forward me any info I need to make sure you get the credit.

mysql interface to allow easy administration of

your mysql databases directly from the control

panel.
