This is not a result of using the quick reply feature.

If a user takes too long (not sure what too long is) while finishing a normal reply this message is generated.

It's pretty frustrating to older members who seem to take a long time to post or are creating long messages.

Has anyone found a fix for this yet? Its really a problem for our board. People like to sit and write a book and they lose it. Its a pretty significant defect.

I'd disable the form checking part in the code.

and comment it out.

Be aware though, that you are potentially opening doors to exploits. Not very likely, but possible.
