In order to install UBB.threads version 7 your server will need to meet the following requirements:

Minimum version of PHP: 4.3
Minimum version of MySQL: 4.0

So what happens if I try to run it on mysql 3.23? My php is version 4.3.

How hard is it to upgrade mysql and will it interfere with my other boards if I go ahead and upgrade? I have two existing 6.5.2 boards running on the same box that I cannot interrupt while I test out the new version.

Drew

What you can do is install a webserver on your local machine to test with. I typically have a working webserver on my local machine for development purposes.

Upgrading MySQL isn't too bad if it's your own server. Your 6.5 threads will run under MySQL 4 with no problems whatsoever, just not MySQL 5.

Yes, I have a full dedicated server with GoDaddy.

I can pay them to do it. But it shouldn't be that hard to upgrade I guess. I just wanted to make sure that the upgrade wouldn't interfere with the other boards. Well, other than the time I have to close them to do the upgrade.

I'm sure there is an upgrade tutorial on the mysql site?

Just to confirm; you "guarantee" no problems with mysql 4.0 and threads 6.5.2 right?

How can I become a beta tester for ver 7. I purchases a few months ago and have been trying to put ver 6 on my server that has mysql 5. Someone just responded that ubbthreads is not compatable with mysql 5, but ubb 7 is. Would someone please consider me a canidate to test 7. It seems like it is just about finished. I just don't want to let this weekend get away from me. Us computer geeks thrive off of 4 day weekends!!!

Thanks,

I sort of think it might be a little late for you to join the beta testing. But you can read here to see if you qualify:

If you need a virtual environment have a look at VMWare's virtual server product.. its a free download.

Another option for a virtual environment is Microsoft's Virtual PC. You can grab it for free from Microsoft!

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/downloads/sp1.mspx

Yes, I just booted a Linux ISO from it.

I discovered that I have PHP 4.3.3, but only MySql 3.23.58 on a shared server.

Will it definitely NOT work on MySql 3.23.58?

It MAY work, but it'd be unsupported... theres only one way to see if it'll work though, and that's to test it...

I received the following response from my service provider:

-----beginning of email-----

Hello,

We can allow you to move to one of the newer servers running the following

mysql Distrib 4.1.18,
PHP 4.3.10 (cgi)

Relocating to the new server involves the following steps:

1. We create the account on the server that matches your requested plan type
2. After receiving the login info - you need to upload the site to the new server and configure it to your liking (users, e-mails, cgi scripts, etc.)
3. After testing the site - you request a DNS change to point your domain(s) to the new IP address.
4. The DNS change takes 6-8 hours and after a safe period of time (1-2 days) we proceed with deletion of your old site.

Please make sure that you understand the steps involved and advise us of your decision.

-----end of email-----

I transferred UBB Classic (cgi files) from one server to another, however, I never transferred UBB Threads (php files) from one server to another, therefore, in preparation for version 7, with transferring these php and other files, how do I also transfer the database itself, or do I need to concern myself about transferring the database?

Daryl, if you're currently running UBB.classic and will be upgrading to .threads, which sounds like the case, then you don't need to worry about the database. The installer will create all of the tables for you. You'd only need to worry about transfering the database if you have actually been running threads and don't want to lose any of the data.

Ok, then you'll definitely want to transfer the database. Normally your host will do this for you. Otherwise you'll either need to do this using something like phpmyadmin, or if you have shell access you can use mysqldump. The easiest way would be to get your host to do the transfer. If they won't then we can give more instructions from there.

If you have shell access and want to do it yourself:
MySQL Export: mysqldump -uusername -ppassword databasename > databasename.sql
MySQL Import: mysql -h localhost -uusername -ppassword databasename < databasename.sql

You'd export from mysql on the current machine, send the file to the other machine then import.

myself, I'd mysql export, then tar up the file, then transfer, then untar, then mysql import; by tarring the file before you transfer you'll save yourself time, especially if you end up downloading it locally to transfer wink

tar is a unix command to combine multiple files into one archive, with the option to compress the file. It is like a zip file for windows, or a sit file for macs.

I was told by one of my service provider technicians that I can do a site download into my own computer that will automatically also include the database all in a tar WinRar type file. I can then restore it into the new server.

Will this work?

It should, would partly depend on if you are installing into the same type server with similar paths, etc

Some of the utilities provided by some control panels are worthless, I used to work for a webhost that used Ensim and I completley dispised the ensim backups, they almost always errored out and hardly ever created a full backup...

That makes it a little scary about moving this onto a new server, although they will not delete what is on the old server until they know that the stuff on the new server is working ok.

I would prefer they would do an upgrade of MySql instead, however, they don't seem to want to do that.

I may do a backup and see how it works on version 7.

I may also test out Version 7, Beta 5 to see how it works there, as that will help me in reaching a decision on what to try and do.

I am finding out search doesn't work with mysql 3.23.58 - throws a 'you've got an error in your syntax' error. Mysql 3.x is just soooo old - webhosts that insist on running it should be abandoned and made to shout 'unclean' when they advertise

I agree whole heartedly Allen ;)...

I think one reason they don't upgrade is how passwords where updated in MySQL4, and don't realise you can have them fnction the same way with some tweaking :/

That's a 2 second reset

Their hosts just offered them a paid upgrade to mysl 4.1 - it's only 2 years old: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/news-4-1-7.html

All depends upon the Control panel though - some are slow to work officially with the latest all singing all dancing verions, which many users just do not need.

It's a cycle tho - they don't need it because the developers of software can't write to the newer standards since the hosts won't support it.

Plesk 8.01 supports php5+, at least on my webhost. Getting mysql to 5+ hasn't been quite as easy, but I'm working on it - we need to promote those good hosts who will support it and move away from those who won't - money will pull them to our side or they'll go the way of dial-up net service and be relegated to second/third-class status

Hi Rick, I'd like assistance upgrading to the newest version. We're currently using 6.7.2 - site: http://www.drycarpet.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi - any suggestions?
