Just installed 6.2.1.1 (Linux), and have 9 members, from 1 to 11 (with 2 & 10 having been deleted). I wondered if I could manually assign or change a user to be #2, so I looked around in the ubbmembers directory on the server. It appears that if I wanted to reassign (for example) user #11 to be #2, I could do it this way:
-rename the 00000011.cgi to 00000002.cgi
-edit the memberlist.cgi and move the line for user #11 into the user #2 slot and change the "00000011" at the end of that line to a "00000002"
-edit last_number.cgi if the last number used is now different

I haven't done it (yet), but was just curious...
Would this be the correct way to change the users number? Is there a better way? Is it a bad thing to mess with those files or the user numbers?

So, don't mess with the member numbers. I can live with that.
But before I drop it, let me add that the users I want to mess with have NO posts and nothing to lose or mess up besides their registration info, and so I'm thinking it would be safe to alter their numbers.
Seems like it would work... (just wondering)

When a post is made, or reply, or a new member joins etc, notations are made in various files. Changing the numbers is asking for problems that could require you to scratch the board and start over. It is not recommended, or supported if it goes bad
