I guess I'm doing something wrong. I hated all the default avatars so I deleted them and uploaded a bunch of my own, but nothing shows int he popup window. Is there something else that needs to be done before custom files will show? The instructions say anything with the specified extensions will be recognized - I have tried .gif and .jpg files with no luck?

If you've followed all the instructions for installing, upgrading etc, then the best bet is to fill out a support ticket so it can be checked.

I cannot use a support ticket - I have modded some code.

Has anyone added avatars yet?

I have reuploaded the stock avatars and they do not show either...

Just for clarification, I did the upgrade without incident, and the stock avatars displayed and worked fine. I deleted them a few at a time, and the pop up changed accordingly. It's just adding new (or re-adding the existing) that isn't working.

What are the settings in your control panel? I have assorted images in mine, new old and custom and they work fine.

That appears fine, you mentioned your board is modified, have you tried setting up a test board, and seeing if this problem occurs on a clean install?

I just did a fresh install, no mods currently (had wordlets and sticky threads)...still the same result.

If you mean permissions, it's 777.

The content is back to stock.

OK, for anyone else that has the problem, here's the answer, although the actual problem was not disclosed:

From: Kate Sloan

Hello Bryan,

It's all taken care of - it was just a tiny issue regarding permissions and hitting the Upgrade button fixed it (didn't actually upgrade anything, it's just the process that the Upgrade feature goes through that we needed). I tried uploading an avatar to your avatars directory and it works fine now.
Let me know if you have any other problems!
Thanks,
Kate

This may be the problem - I see there is a javascript file in the avatars directory, presumably created after the 'upgrade' function runs. I only presume this because it is not present in the zip files.

Anyway, when I deleted all the old avatars and added my own, I'm sure I deleted this file as well, as I selected the whole dir contents for deletion.

I deleted all of the UBB stock avatars from the Avatars directory on my server.

I uploaded some of my own.

When I try to change to a new avatar in “my profile” it doesn’t take effect on the board. It keeps the current avatar. However, I noticed that if I go into control panel and upgrade my board, the new avatar finally appears.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Using 6.3 - I have a heap of non-stock avatars (and the ot_avatars_lib.js file ) but have no problem changing one . . .

I only need to clear cache and "voila".

guvner,

Clearing the cache worked. Thanks.

It seems kind of weird that this has to be tied into the cache.

When a member changes their avatar in their profile, and then they don't see it live on the board right away, they're going to think they're doing something wrong.

Is clearing the cache every time someone changes their avatar really the only way for people to see their new avatar on the board?

No problems here - what I also did was to rename all the IP ones x..... so that all of our own ones will show up before the IP ones.

Didn't have to clear the cache.

Also not sure what the permissions has to do with it, as these are image files, so the permissiosn should not be an issue.

I re-uploaded the stock UBB Avatars directory to my server and upgraded my board in control panel.

However, I’m still having problems.

When I change an avatar in my profile, I can’t see the change take effect on the board until I go back into control panel and upgrade my board. Clearing the cache doesn’t even show the newly selected avatar.

Any ideas? Thanks very much.

After clicking "set url", are you getting the avatar showing up (top left) or the red cross placeholder?

If the avatar shows up are you sure that you're clicking on "update profile"?

If the red cross is there - remember the file names are case sensitive . . . I ran into that problem yesterday when I provided a custom avatar to a member who'd emailed me a pic.

After editing it to make it conform, I upped it 4 or 5 times without result until I realised that the filename was Archer.gif and I was pointing to archer.gif (doh! )

maybe????

guvner,

Thanks for the tips. I’ve triple-checked everything you said.

However, my problem is still the same. If I change an avatar in my profile, the only way to see it take effect on the board is to Upgrade my board in control panel. Clearing the cache has no result. I still see the old avatar until I upgrade in Control Panel.

I’m at a loss on this one. Can’t figure it out.

guvner,

Thanks very much for taking the time to check out my issue with the avatars.

One last question. In your test posts on my board, you appeared to be able to instantly see your avatar change on the board, when you changed it in your profile. However, when I change my avatar, I don't see the change until I go into Control Panel and clear the cache. I guess that's really related to my browser, and not UBB?

I'd say so Mitch, the avatar change worked perfectly for me - it was instantaneous . . .

I have my browser set to check for newer versions "every time I visit a page", if your settings are the same, try F5 to refresh your browser cache after a change.

Also just another thought, I'm not sure how the cookies work, but because I have a "dummy" member set up ( to do a bit of seeding), sometimes it messes with the new post indicators and the cache when I switch "ID's to post.

CYA

I didn't remove the original avatars or change the .js file. I just added more .jpg images, cleared the cache, and they are NOT showing up with the others.

What am I doing wrong? This is 6.3.0 on Gratuitous Chats (see sig for link).

Thanks.

Maybe a support ticket might be in order but perhaps you might consider re-doing the basics over again first.

I noticed that your stock avatars are in "/ubb/Avatars" and you personal is in "/ubb", are you sure you've uploaded (binary) your new ones to the right dir and performed an upgrade through cp?

Sorry if that sounds too obvious - but I miss the obvious all the time

1) I uploaded my new avatars into /ubb/Avatars where the rest of them are. I assume this is right! They are all JPGs and I uploaded them as Binary.

2) I closed the forum. I did UPGRADE from maintenance. I cleared the cache. I opened the forum.

3) New Avatars still don't show up. You can't miss them. They are all 64x64 versions of Sparks albums covers. They're not there.

What's my problem?

Thanks,
Debbie

My avatar doesn't change until I re-post a message. Then they all change.

Debbie,

I'm not sure, but it sounds like it could be a ot_avatars_lib.js problem.

Changing your avatar: This is the designed behavior. We can and will not have the board clear the entire topic cache every time someone changes their avatar.

Adding new avatars: Make sure that the file names contain ONLY a-z, A-Z, 0-9, the dash, and the underscore. Make sure that they match the valid file extensions given in the control panel. Make sure you go ALL THE WAY to the last page - they might hide out there. They should be recognized immediately - no need to close the board or hit the upgrade button (which clears the cache, BTW).
