Is there a solution generally available that would allow registered users to upload files such as images, spreadsheets, Powerpoint presentations, PDF's etc into a folder within the BB.

Our site is full of reference material and if they use their own file space then later searches may have broken links which we want to avoid.

On the other hand we don't want to allow all and sundry access to muck up our UBB either

For security reasons, no.

The problem with allowing file upload is someone could upload a simple cgi or php file that is programmed to capture user cookies and/or access your members directory and display the admins passwords. And before someone suggests to filter by file type, that isn't secure enough to prevent this from happening.

Clarification on that... while we can make it secure enough, doing so requires that the modules be compiled on the server by the web hosting provider, which is something almost no host is willing to do (or provide the resources for the user to do on his or her own).

Because we can't make it secure enough, we have no plans to include an upload feature in UBB.classic at this time. This may change in the future if we can determine other ways of ensuring that most uploaded file types are safe.

Do note that UBB.threads and UBB.x have upload features, if you require them.
