I am having trouble installing the demo version of UBB on a Win2k server.

The problem is apparently with my absolute path to the cgi files. I get the following error message:

"Sorry, but we couldn't find a record for the UserName you entered. Please try again.
If you are configuring your bulletin board for the first time, this is probably due to the fact that you did not set the proper variable for your CGI Directory absolute path.

Use your Back button to try again."

Help...I think I have the paths set correctly, am I missing something really obvious?

http://www.beanerscentral.com/ubb/cp.html

Thanks

Here is the path I am using...to my knowledge, it is correct:

D:/home/reseller@rabelle.net/webadmin@beanerscentral.com/beanerscentral.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi

Can't find the paths (or something else may be broken). Are you certain that those are your paths and that you uploaded the Members folder in the ubbcgi folder, with the Admin5.cgi file in it.

Just a thought

I'm not sure what you mean by "can't find the paths"

But, yes I do have the Admin5.cgi file in the Members directory....and I tried placing the Members directory in the ubbcgi folder and am still getting the same error.

i meant that i couldn't guess you paths, but now i think i have. only problem is you haven't set write permission on the variable files.

Your paths are:
D:/home/reseller@rabelle.net/webadmin@beanerscentral.com/beanerscentral.com/www/cgi-bin/ubbcgi
D:/home/reseller@rabelle.net/webadmin@beanerscentral.com/beanerscentral.com/www/ubb
D:/home/reseller@rabelle.net/webadmin@beanerscentral.com/beanerscentral.com/www/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/Members
D:/home/reseller@rabelle.net/webadmin@beanerscentral.com/beanerscentral.com/www/cgi-bin/ubbcgi
Once you fix the permissions on those files you'll be able to set your paths.

Just a thought

I had my hosting company set the permissions...now I am getting an error about including required files.

Error including required files: In string, @rabelle now must be written as @rabelle at D:homereseller@rabelle.netwebadmin@beanerscentral.combeanerscentral.comwwwcgi-binubbcgi/UltBB.setup line 3, near "D:/home/reseller@rabelle" In string, @beanerscentral now must be written as @beanerscentral at D:homereseller@rabelle.netwebadmin@beanerscentral.combeanerscentral.comwwwcgi-binubbcgi/UltBB.setup line 3, near "@rabelle.net/webadmin@beanerscentral" Compilation failed in require at D:homereseller@rabelle.netwebadmin@beanerscentral.combeanerscentral.comwwwcgi-binubbcgicpanel2.cgi line 46. Make sure these files exist, permissions are set properly, and paths are set correctly.

Any ideas?

The UBB (or perl itself) is having issues with the fact you've got @ signs in your path. Try putting @ signs in as @ and see if it helps.

I changed all of my paths to @, and I am still getting the same error?

Any ideas?

Is there any way you can put your ubb on a path with @ symbols in the folder names?

I assume you mean is there any way I can put it ubb on a server without @ in the path.

No, that isn't possible at this point. I'm wondering if there are any other options.

It may be necessary to directly edit UltBB.setup to get the backslashes in the right place. I suggest you use the trouble ticket system and let Infopop look at your site. Be sure to refer to this thread so they can see what has been going on.

They probably will not respond over the weekend. If you want to take a crack at it, download UltBB.setup in ascii mode, add the backslashes to the indicated paths in a text editor, the upload in ascii mode. Please do not try this unless you are comfortable with this kind of editing. Save an unaltered copy of UltBB.setup as it now stands before you make the change.

Ordinarily, direct editing of variable files is discouraged as everything can be done from the control panel if permissions and paths are correct and known. Yours is a very special case.

Hal,

I manually edited the UltBB.setup and had some success. What I mean is - I was able to go into Forum settings and create a couple of Forums. However; when I click on the Your UBB link, it will show the forums I created...but when I click on a forum - I get the following error.

"Unable to write thread summary file No such file or directory"

Also, even after manually editing the UltBB.setup file...I still can't go into the general settings area of the control panel and successfully save any settings. I get the following error message:

"Sorry, but we couldn't find a record for the UserName you entered. Please try again.
If you are configuring your bulletin board for the first time, this is probably due to the fact that you did not set the proper variable for your CGI Directory absolute path.

Use your Back button to try again."

I don't know...granted this installation is not working perfectly, but an awful lot of things are working...which makes me wonder if I really do have an absolute path issue. Especially since the Admin5 username and password seem to work in all of the other control panel areas.

I suggest you use the trouble ticket approach I mentioned a couple of posts up the way. It looks to me like the UltBB.setup is going to be written incorrectly every time you make any change in General Settings and send you back to the same error messsage.

Your paths are very unusual and it may not be possible to do the configurations properly. Infopop technical support people may have run into this before and have a solution. I sure don't.

Ask your hosts if there is any way to use a path without the @ character. They may be using some sort of links or aliases and can tell you another path to your files.

Hal,

I would like to use the ticket system...but I am still evaluating the demo. They ask for a license # and password before they allow me into the ticket system.

Is there another way for me to access infopop support?

It is possible to use the @ in a path but you will have to hand edit the esape in front of the @ after any time you touch you general variables area of your control panel.

As you can see perl will unescape the @ every time you enter general settings and you will have to manually reenter it by editng your UltBB.setup file.

Just to quickly re-visit my previous post (actually 2 back now)...do you know the remedy or solution for this error message:

"Unable to write thread summary file No such file or directory"

With the exception of not being able to save the General Settings...this appears to be the only part of the demo not functioning properly.

Thanks navaho,

I think I understand the @ sign situation pretty well now

But can you take a look at this error:

"Unable to write thread summary file No such file or directory"

I get it after I click the Your UBB link and when I try to click on the forums I setup. Is this a path related issue?

Thanks guys

This is a guess. Normally, when you submit General Settings it makes Forum directories and the files within. If the program is unescaping the absolute paths, it cannot find its way. Look in the nonCGI directory and see if you have nine sub-directories named Forum1 to Forum9. If not, create them (full permissions) and try again to configure the forums. It may then be able to finish the forum setup.

I created the 9 Forum directories with full permissions...and I'm still getting the same error. I'm wondering if there is any way to manually complete forum setup. My guess is that it needs the files in the Forum directories. Any ideas?

This installation has been a nightmare! The path issue appears to have really complicated things.

Sorry . The various configuration processes are completed when General Settings are submitted for the first time. Since your paths prevent that from proceeding normally, I don't know what else to suggest. One of the Infopop programmers will have to deal with it. Since you do not have a license to use the trouble ticket system, try this link for technical questions. Refer to the URL for this thread.

Hal - I just wanted to thank you for all of your help. The situation has been moved up to Dave...and after we get it resolved. I will post up what we did.

Thanks again.
