#96902 - 04/17/03 05:26 PM Search all posts by posts feature broken after move (weird)

I moved my installation from one domain to another (on the same web server, actually). I followed the directions, which meant installing it anew at the new location, testing it, moving the files over, reimplementing styles, updating the threads, etc. The short story is that everything works fine.

However, one thing that seems broken is the search all posts by this user feature. (The general search feature works fine, and I can even search for a user's post through the general search -- it's the specific feature of searching for all posts by a user, when in the profile page or the admin, that doesn't work.)

When I try to search for a user's post, the following happens:
1) The new screen opens up to start searching through the forums.
2) As messages are found, the "Matches Thus Far" briefly changes to a number like 1 or 2. But then when the next forum page is considered, it drops back to zero.
3) When the search gets through all of the forums, it inevitably turns up zero forums, despite the fact that it seems to have found a few along the way. And despite the fact that if I use the search form, it works.

I am, as a result, befuddled.

Sincerely,
Tim

After moving everything over, did you make sure to run the Index function?

You may also want to go to General Settings, scroll to the bottom, make sure the little box is checked and then hit submit as well.

Hm. I don't know which one of those did the trick, (and I swear I rebuilt the index and did all of that stuff during the move!). But it's working now.

Thanks for your speedy help!

Sincerely,
Tim

Sadly, more has come up.

The index appeared to work, but now is definitely broken again.

Let me give you an example:
1) Go to http://www.iccsafe.org/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi
2) If you use the search utility and search for posts by a user named "maniac" you'll see HUNDREDS of posts found as it clicks through the dozen forums. But when it shows the final results, it shows 12 total. They're all from one forum. (Interestingly, if you go back and do a search for all "maniac" posts within just that one forum, you'll get 200 results -- not the 12 that you got when you searched for all the posts in all the forums.
3) If you look at one of those threads and look at maniac's profile, you'll see that he has 1700 posts+.

Argh. Any ideas?

The old 5-series code is rather picky about what it decided to process correctly. There are very few of us that are still around from those days... I don't recall ever seeing this problem, unfortunately.

Let's start with a little basic troubleshooting... first, let's assume that the search index files are completely corrupted. Delete'em - they have names similar to "forumindex.cgi", and will be in your NonCGI directory *AND* in a directory called "pindex" inside your Members directory. Just delete them.

Then go reindex in the control panel once again.

Then, before testing the search, *DELETE* the searchlogs directory (and its contents) from the NonCGI directory, if it exists. If it doesn't exist, create it, and set permissions on it to 777.

If this doesn't work, your best path would be to upgrade. 5.44a is over three years old... The 6 series has far better stability and security, not to mention features...

So far, so good. My initial tests (including the one I referenced in my previous post) are fully functional.

Thanks again for the timely and effective support. I'll re-run these searches sometime next week, but I won't be back unless something sputters.

Thanks,
Tim
